Is there a safe way to repair this mess or just buy another wiring harness???

That's a Fire waiting to happen! There has been and may still be a couple of wiring harnesses on eBay now.

Its not that bad. Ive fixed worse. Some wire, solder and heat shrink tubing ought to do the trick. Just depends on how much time you want to invest. To splice wires, I use non insulated connectors and solder them. Once the heat shrink goes on, its as good as new.

If I'm not mistaken, that's the way it comes from the factory, you just have the tape missing and maybe one or two wires have to be soldered.Bruno.

Bruno is correct. Looks worse because its all unraveled from the harness. I do see a few frayed strands and some dried, cracked insulation. I'd fix it and call it a day.

Thanks. Not to familiar with soldering so I guess I will be heading to an electrical shop...Only noticed it when I replaced the starter and alt....Guess the good lord looks after fools and babies...

I guess now would be a good time to get a nice butane soldering gun, some supplies from Radio Shack and the local Autozone. Autozone sells a nice assortment pack of heat shrink tubing and sells the wire. Radio Shack sells the non insulated connectors, solder and flux. Go for it!!. Look at it this way, its already messed up!

Nothing more satisfying than doing it yourself. You'll save yourself a ton of money and have the tools when your done.:TU:

I think home Depot or Lowe's will have the stuff too. Just make sure you get solder specifically for wiring. There is also waterproof heat shrink tubing if you wanna go that route.

I bought the nifty little butane micro-torch from Lowes. You will need that torch for quick heat- unless you have a monster soldering iron. I soldered up some new connections when I dog-robbed the entire forward harness out of the donor car. It had A/C, so that dictated using the harness. But I ran new #10 wire to the coil for both cranking and running. Hard to believe, but the previous owner had the iron wire feeding the HEI. It runs better, now. As has been mentioned, those splices are how the factory did it.

Be careful when soldering 10 ga wire not to let the solder wick too far.

The splice is factory and was wrapped at that point with silver duct tape to insulate the splice. then the whole harness was wrapped.

Trash it and buy new. For the love of Cars please trash the pink heater hose as well. It is disturbing.

Get a new one from M&H Electrical. Well worth the money. All new wires for the engine will pay off. 40 year old insulation gets quite brittle.

Being on the east coast you will get it quicker from Factory Fit. They sell the same parts as M&H. They have the same part numbers. Something is fishy there. I have waited 2 weeks for parts from M#H and factory fit I get in 2 days.

buying a new engine harness was some of the best money I ever spent on the GS. My harness was hacked badly before I got the car around the starter terminals and also around the coil and alt. I had repaired it (and I am very good at this kind of stuff) but there is only so much you can do with 40+ year old wire, brittle insulation and multiple repairs. If yours isn't that bad .. have at it.
