    Alright guys,
the diff in my 64 riv is humming. It was humming when I bought the car over a yr. ago. Lately it seems a little louder. i checked the lube level and it is full.
Where can I get a 3.42 gear for it????? and the bearings/races ect. for a complete rebuild.
I am thinking about doing it my self, I have the shop manual and the tools only I have never done one before. But if I could master it I would save my self a ton of money and I would trust it.

Unfortunately nobody's making the gearsets anymore. If it helps your search, my parts book shows the same 3.42:1 part number for '63-'65 big cars.

Doc, the gears up to '70 will work. Part numbers are different because the later ones (If I remember correctly) have left hand bolts instead of right, or vice versa. You will need a 3.42 posi carrier of the correct year, '64, to have the gears work. You will need a specialized puller for the carrier bearings. This is a diff like no other you will ever see or have seen. All the bearings & seals are available. You will have to use your shims to shim the pinion & maybe you'll be lucky & not need more to set the pinion pre-load.

Doc-Another way to go-since these fail rarely...you could source another setup and just do a quick drop out R+R. If you want the 'fun'/experience of the rebuild, you can do that later while keeping your Riv on the road. I've found that the dynaflow Rivs usually have the 3.23 set, while the 400 trans 3.07-but recently parted a '65 that had 3.23. 3.42 is found less often as with the GS and optional with others and seems to command more $. The 'integral' rear gear sets started with '66. I can tell you're not a young pup as you aren't saying, 'gotta be a posi'-good luck

Well , I would actually like to have a posi. because I live up on a steep hill with a gravel drive way. but the car has a peg leg now and has never spun a wheel coming up the hill yet. Too much wt. on the rear wheels i guess.

Welllll, i got that problem fixed. A board member here had a good 3.08 posi. for sale. i bought it and put it in and the car is quiet and smooth as silk. found the source of the problem too. Some dimwit that worked on the car before I got it had r&r d the 3rd member and instead of putting in a gasket around the housing he used ''blue glue''. It did not seal good and water got into the housing causing the ring and pinion, spiders, wheel brngs ect to rust pit. I had to set down and make a gasket but it had a good one withe sealer on both sides when it went back. Problem solved.
