Im going to rewire my fuseable link and put a fuse block near the battery and i was just wondering what size fuse to use also what is the guage of wire coming from the harness? it s the circuit that supplys the fuse block not the lights. Also went out and bought a 93 amp externally regulated alternator that i will fit while im playing with all the other wires tommorrow.

    Mark,
They sell the fusible links in most parts stores under the "Help" Line.

thanks for the reply larry. I want to put a fuse near the battery as i dont want to have to fight the headers and crawl under the car if this ever happens again

    Mark,
In case what happens again? If you melted a fusible link, you probably had a major short. The fusible links are fuses, in that they protect the wiring of the car. You can't replace that with a fuse block near the battery (if I'm understanding you correctly?) I would just replace the fusible link with the correct part.

Let me explain this again. I know ive got a short somewhere in the system. My car has got headers which made it very difficult to get to the old fuseable link. I made a temporary fix to get it home and now dont want to have to replace the fuseable link in such an inaccessible spot only to have it blow again if i cant trace the fault or if it happens again. It is purely to make things easy on myself, not to try and put a "larger" fuse in and hope the problem goes away. I dont know a whole lot about the wiring side of things - but im not stupid either.

    I would say 30 or 40 amps.

Unless you are running some unusual electrical items, your highest amperage (besides starting the car) will come from the alternator. If your alternator can put out 50 amps, that would be your fuse size.

(In theory a bit less than that because some of the amps will go to running the engine and elsewhere)

With that size alternator, I hope you are also upgrading your wiring.

The factory wire coming from the + on the alternator will not carry that kind of amperage!

I did this a few years ago, but unfortunately I don't remember the guage wire or fuse rating. It should be the same rating as the fusable link (I think it was 30 amp). The nice thing is, you can add other fuses for other items in the future (get a block from a newer car).

Remember, after fixing the short and doing all the work to put in a fuse that will make future issues easier, it will basically guarantee you'll never have to replace the fuse. Your car will instead find something that is totally difficult for you to fix.

Larry, the fuse was put in series with the wire that used to have the fusable link. Therefore, it will act in place of the link. It doesn't matter if its a fusable link (piece of wire that will burn in two) or a fuse. Both will break the circuit at the given load.

Let's go back a step. Why such a large alternator?

    Good question.

dual electric fans, maybe electric fuel pump, plus ive gone with an internally regulated alternator, so may as well get a 93 amp unit so it will handle anything i throw at it.
