I think I've read just about every thread on the board and I can't seem to find anything that points me in the direction of what tranny to use. I guess the better question is what 3 or 4 spd tranny will fit and what is the more common one to find in the bone yards? Thanks Tunerz
Tunerz, Muncie was the stock GM unit for those years. If you want to stick with 4-speed which is a good match for a big car. Find an M20 in decent shape or settle for the more modern Borg Warner T-10 or Super T-10. These are pretty much identically dimensional to a muncie and completely interchangeable except for shifters. There are a few variations but they are basic: TH350 output shaft has coarse spline input shaft TH400 output shaft has fine spline input shaft
I wish Buick made these. I want a 71 4 speed convertible Centurion. Early 71's had a 3-on-the-tree standard transmission, but was quickly phased out to make the TH400 standard on the Centurion. There was only ONE 3 speed made, and no one seems to know where it went. It was a black convertible.
That would be one cool black convertible to find .... but a 4-speed floor shift transplant would rate a close second.
Oh I'll do it! The only issue lies with the fact that I have a bench seat in the front as well as the back. I'd prefer to keep the bench, but in the name of old school performance/fuel economy..... well I always wanted a couch in my room  Next issue, where the heck am I gonna find a munchie or the t-10's? The bone yards around here have nill for any vehicles before 1985 'ish. Other then the tranny and the pedal assembly, is there any special parts I should be hunting for? Many Thanks Tunerz
Time to surf the Pontiac sites. Bonneville stickshifts in 1971 were more common than Buick. Since 71 was the first big car shared platform, I'd say start looking there. Want a low-Buck four speed? Seek an Eighties Chevy truck New Process A-833 overdrive. I used to run them in the Regal. Same Dimensions as your Muncies and T-10s. They have 3.00 first gears and fourth is OD. Output shaft is identical for TH350. However, its not a performance trans like the Muncies and T-10s. But you'll likely pay $100 or less for one. I hope you acheive you goal :TU: :3gears:
OKay, next issue what year range am I looking for, for the munchie's and t-10 as they seem to differ every few years (?) Thanks Tunerz
[Want a low-Buck four speed? Seek an Eighties Chevy truck New Process A-833 overdrive.] Wasn't the A-833 a chrystler tranny? or is the "new Process A-833" a chevy spin off? Thanks again, Tunerz
