what kind of lifters go in a stright 8 i got a 1940 buick 2 door sedan and it got a bad lifter is what i was told i just bought it how can i tell if it is bad
The 40 buicks all had a solid lifters. You may have a bent pushrod, or a bad rocker arm. The rocker arms have a small steel insert in the tip that contacts the valve stem this may have come out. Remove the valve cover and check out where the noise is coming from. Unusual for a lifter to go bad. What series is your car? I have some odd single pushrods around if you need one. Also it may be possible that the motor was replaced some time ago and may have hydrulic lifters. Check motor number, located on boss on right side of motor just to the rear of distributor. Jim Schilf
Your 1940 Buick 2 dr sedan , should be a model 48. Information is on right side of cowl, on GM plate. 1940 engines model 40 - 50 start at number 3786214. The motor mounts will be on the front of motor to frame, this was monting up to 1948, from 1949 to 1953 there were two motor monts on the side of the block. If your motor has the motor mounts on the side it probably is the later motor and would have hydraulic lifters. Hope this has helped. Jim Schilf palbuick
If you have a bad lifter, you probably also have a wiped out cam. Find the lifter making noise, and remove it. Lay a straight edge across the bottom, and if it is flat or a little convex (higher in the middle than on the sides) the lifter is OK, and like Jim said, it is probably a push rod. If the straight edge touches both sides and you can see daylight in the middle, if you put in a new lifter it will only be a temporary fix, as the lobe will wipe it out again
