what kind of auto insurance do you have?

Just curious. I signed up with AAA since they there were only ones happy to insure someone without a US driving licence temporarily until I passed my test.
Because of the kind of car 67 skylark convertible they deemed it a classic and so would insure it for a maximum set value. Since I bought it $12900, though have already spent probably another $3000 on it I insured it for $13000...
I got full comprehensive insurance or whatever you call it here in the US. Should I insure it for more do you think, or would its purchase value be sufficient.
AAA's concern is that the car may actually increase in value so thats why they specify this kind of maximum value deal...

The AAA guy was very excited about it. Because of the car he said he had to take polaroids of it for insurance purposes. He must have taken about 20 pics from every single angle.. He couldnt stop admiring it...

    any thoughts?

I guess the question is what type of coverage you have, and how
much it cost for this coverage ?

Well i dont have insurance. It's more of getting money for what they would think is junk. 1K if anything happens to it. Good thing it's sitting safely in MY garage.

well I am paying $750 for full coverage.. bear in mind that I am new in this country and in LA> A newer car like say a PT cruiser was around $2500! I live in a pretty dodgy area and have no garage so there is a fairly high chance of getting my care stolen overnight from my house. I have a kill switch for what good that does. I dont believe in this steering wheel bars. I know for a fact that any kid (well in England at least) can get past one of those in about 5 seconds. I think they just provide 'peace of mind' for the owner without actually doing anything very useful.
So I figure the most likely thing to happen is for the car to be stolen and if so I want to get as much cash from the insurance company as possible to cover what I have spent on this baby

  6. With no garage to keep your car in, you wouldn't be able to get collector car insurance from Hagerty, Grundy, etc, where you would have an agreed value policy. In other words, you and the ins co "agree" what the car is worth, and if it's stolen or wrecked, and unrepairable, they pay you that exact amount. I expect you will only be able to get a std insurance policy, in which case, you are left to struggle with the ins co over what market value is, if you suffer a total loss. Good luck.

I go with USAA, and their rates are very reasonable. I'm paying less than $1100 per year for my GS, my truck and the wife's 2002 Malibu. The catch is that you have to either be a veteran or have a family member covered by them in order to get coverage from them.

I'd start by looking at their website:

    http://www.usaa.com

Taking a look at their eligibility requirements, it looks like you need to be a US citizen, and have to have at least one of the following going for you:

    - Current or former member of US armed forces, or member of a commissioning program
    - Current or former Spouse of a USAA member
    - Parents were current or former members of USAA

I've got my homeowner's policy through them too, so I do get a little discount on my car insurance as a result, but they are still far and away the cheapest auto insurance company out there. (Homeowner's is merely about the same price as everywhere else.) Heck, they send me a refund most years because they estimated my premiums as a little too high. My only complaint about them is due to a minor screw-up with a change of address form when I moved that was probably as much my fault as it was theirs.

While I consider USAA to be the BEST company I have ever dealt with, State Farm insures my Skylark. USAA gets the house, credit cards, etc.
I pay State Farm 69.00 every 6 months. They give me 10K if the car is destroyed, burned or stolen. I need to have it appraised as it is worth more than that now that it is road worthy. Like David mentioned, I have to keep it garaged, not use it as a daily driver, and don't leave it unattended in say, Wal-Mart parking lots. I can live with that.
