What Is Your Temperature At The Center Vent?

To gauge our A/C systems, and for future reference, what is your center vent temperature and what was the ambient? Refrigerant type?

I'll start...and I hope to get better, as I found out last night my vacuum hoses were crossed under the dash and my heater control valve had no vacuum to close it. Hopefully this correction will improve vent temperatures...I will report back...

    R134a
66-68 average...did see 64 on occasion, on an 85 degree day. Nick had a digital A/C thermometer.

Last night I did see 49 degrees at the center vent (with a meat thermometer), but I just pulled the car out of the garage and I don't know what the ambient was inside the garage. It was hot outside the garage, probably around 88. This temp was taken on the AC setting after a couple minutes idling in the driveway, not REC.

    Thanks.

R134A conversions dont really work well with mechanical fans. If you put an electric fan on the condenser, I bet your vent temp would drop.

I regularly see 37-45 out of the center vent on my 73 Riviera. This is at a low cruise around 30-35 MPH .Still has R-12 . I haven't added any in the last 2 years. This is measured with a digital Mac tools Thermo.

Thanks Lou. Do you ever come to Yardley's picnic, as you're in the area?

So, I gather not a lot of people take vent temperatures when servicing their A/C?

Last week, in 95 degree ambient, car blew 50 degrees (using meat thermometer) all the way the 35 minute trip to a car show in Pottstown on REC, and back after sitting in the heat. I'm very happy with the performance. With R12, chassis manual states I should see 42-45 @90 degrees and 44-47 @ 100 degrees. Thanks again Nick Rabi!

Actual vent temp isn't really important, and it is one of the things that can drive you crazy if you worry about it.
It's all about how cold the air "feels" coming from the vents.
In a perfect world, the center vent temp would be 33 degrees, that's what the system is designed to do. However, at 100 ambient, 60 degree, dry air from the vents feels downright cold.
A 40 degree drop is pretty good performance.

70 electra conv r12 recent fill ,new low press hose, old condensor, evap, poa, compressor and new drier ,center vent 54 day with hot ass old conv top ,meat therm, ambient 86, night 47 deg ambient 80.......although the technical factor i use is when someoone in the car starts bitching its too cold THATS GOOD AC

    33 degrees on a 15 year old R134A conversion.

Alot of factors to consider, and all are a huge factor in vent temp. Air temp, sunload, heat soak, etc. Idling for a few minutes in park is not enough to get the system going. If the car has been sitting in hot sun for 4 hours, its gonna take 10-5 minutes of cruising to get that vent temp down. If you've been in traffic, hot car, high sunload, you will never get below 60.

Exactly, thats why an electric fan is almost a requirement on a 134A conversion. Low pressure reading equals vent temp.
