I live in Collier County, FL. The Collier County public schools were closed on the religious holiday Rosh Hashhannah. The Collier County public schools are open today on veteran's day. Huh?

My employer gives us a paid holiday above the usuals (New Years, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas), and it isn’t today. The one day I have to choose a day off without pay, a day of vacation, or use a day of sick leave? Veterans Day - and I’m a veteran. I told my boss I was working, because a soldier doesn’t stop working until the mission is completed.

As a vet I always felt gypped. I always had to work Veterans day, but all the Govt people always got it off. If I had the say it would be all vets get the day off and the rest get to go to work.

I'm not a vet and neither are any of my employees, so we work on Veterans day. You're right Fred, no vet should have to work on that day.

    Nothing is wrong here.

The school system has to pick and choose on holidays. A large number of observant jews would not show up at school on Rosh Hashannah. Everybody would show up on Veteran's day. Gotta pick your the holiday to give the best attendance. They're just being practical.

And yeah, they tend to close schools for Good Friday, which is not a religious holiday requiring people not to work. Rosh Hashannah is. If schools were open on Goos Friday, everyone would still show up.

Realistic trade: schools open on Good Friday, closed on Veteran's Day.

I am surprised veterans day isn't recognized as a public holiday.
In New Zealand the 25th of April - Anzac Day( in Australia also) is a public holiday and there are restrictions on what businesses are allowed to trade. Christmas day and Good Friday have trading restrictions also, other public holidays businesses can trade but may carry a 10% surcharge on purchases.

All public offices and schools were closed today as well as many of the shops I have to do business with to do my business. I worked. Will answer my phone and run service calls pretty much any M-F 8-5. If its a real holiday I'll charge overtime rates and tell the cust up front. If they are willing to pay I'll be there in an hour.

oh yeah -- public schools here in Broward get RH and Veterans' Day off. Private schools not necessarily so.

I always thought Veterans day was to show appreciation for the sacrifices the vets made for their country, not a day off for veterans! lol
