What is the minimum allowable diameter of the balancer?

    Hi everybody,

I finally took the timing chain cover off to remove the broken bolt for the waterpump. When I inspected the balancer, I noticed a recessed area where the original old seal had worn into the balancer sealing surface. On the good surface I measure 1.9985" and in the worn area I measure 1.9885". I will replace the old original seal with a modern type seal ring with a lip. Can I just have the diameter turned down to clean it up or are there repair sleeves available? How far can I turn it down in combination with the modern seal?

    Thanks,
    Chris

I dont think that will really affect the sealing. Its .010 on the diameter, so in reality, its only a .005 groove. Add the fact that your going to use a modern grease seal. I dont think its a problem. Was it leaking before you took it apart?

I don't think it was leaking. I had so much dirt and grime build up around it that I could not tell if it was leaking. And once the water pump started to leak there was no way telling. The backside of the balancer (the side towards the engine and as such towards the seal) is dry. I assume if it would have leaked the back would be oily.
As I said, I had to pull the timing chain cover to remove a broken bolt fro the waterpump disassembly. And everyone was suggesting to replace the seal while in there.
