During my 1st trip to the track on Sunday I was told if the car doesn't go under 13 seconds I didn't need to wear one. I brought 2 and an extinguisher just in-case

Check with your local track. They will probably require a "Snell" approved helmet.

    NHRA requirements

    HELMET
    For all 10.00 to 13.99 closed-bodied cars, either an open-face or a full-face Snell M2000, M2005, M2010, K2005, SA2000, SA2005,
    SA2010, SFI 31.1A, 31.1/2005, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.1/2005, or 41.2A helmet with or without a shield is mandatory required.

    For all 9.99 and quicker closed-bodied cars, a full-face Snell M2000, M2005, M2010, K2005, SA2000, SA2005,
SA2010, SFI 31.2A or 41.2A helmet mandatory; shield permitted (goggles prohibited).

As mentioned, look into the certification of the helmet.

SA2005 is good for a few years yet, but I think other ratings are more "current" or soon will be.

Each certification lasts only a set number of years (7? 10? 12?)

This is the last year for Snell 2000 in NHRA. I think it mentioned that helmets were good for 12 years.

I'd watch out as far as helmets go when running slower than 14's. Some states require it even though NHRA does not. I believe in New Jersey you need one no matter what time you run. Check with the track you run at.
