the grille on my 72 skylark is cracked on the side and i've been looking to replace it but i've seen several styles mine has horizontal lines in the middle and little square grids on the sides and it doesn't have any emblems on it i've seen a gsx grille on ebay that is identical except for the emblem

You have the plastic grill. Some 72's have metal grills and some have plastic.
Good plastic grills are really hard to find. Save yours, you may can use some of the parts, or fix it.

is this grille the same as the gsx for 72 just no emblem or are they totally different?

Essentially...yes. That's why Mark mentions keeping it in his response above. The '72 plastic grille you have is what a GS or GSX would have come with...only difference being it was painted slightly differently when compared to the same plastic grilles that showed up on some '72 Skylarks.

KEEP IT and FIX IT....there are threads on this site discussing grille repair. Grilles are NOT EASY TO PACKAGE AND SHIP CORRECTLY so you will pay some pretty decent $$$ just to cover shipping if you find another one.

It's really hard to tell much from your pic....if you can post a larger pic it would help and/or take some pics of any damaged areas and people here will advise you on the best ways to repair it, prep it and paint it.
