The big boss wants to hotrod his late 80's Porsche. He states the big upgrade for his 911 is an upgraded Mass Air Flow sensor and chip. What does this do for his car? Does this change his air/fuel mix? What good will this do w/o an exhaust upgrade? Thanks in advance.
If the computer thinks the air is cooler (denser), then it can handle more fuel because there is more oxygen. More fuel means more go.
The Mass Air Flow sensor is a device that measures the quantity of air flowing into the engine. If the computer knows how much air goes into the engine, it knows how much fuel to add, in order to obtain the proper A/F ratio. The chip will contain a full set of tables for the A/F ratio. Remember- more fuel only means power if you put in enough air to go with it! The ratio is important. The chip also contains all the timing curves. A larger MAF usually is installed because the existing one is too small, and acts as an airflow restriction, although I don't know about Porsches- they might have a different reason. Who knows. -Bob Cunningham
02 sensor and other funky things tell it how to adjust fuel. Though a better MAF help as the computer knows how much air is coming in better. The 3 bar MAP kind is even better. turbo guys use the MAP version over the MAF if they can. Though it may require a computer upgrade. But a MAF can handle up to around 12psi. But a MAP does a better job. The better the car can tell how much air it gets. the better it can adjust fuel.
Do it in this order, computer chip, exhaust, maf. Just check and see if the chip uses the original injectors, if not, upgrade them at the same time you put the chip in.
course I would check around some fan websites / forums. Most chips you can buy suck. You can usually find 3-4 people who burn custom chip for a good price that actualy work.
The big boss claims a 25HP increase over stock with this change. However, it comes with a $2K price tag. IMHO, this is super expensive for an installed chip and MAF sensor. Then again, Porsche guys normally have the jingle to get it done. It's only his $$ I suppose. o No:
A Mass Air Flow Sensor measures how Flatulent the Massachusetts members of the BPG are after consuming large quantities of Taco Bell. While the sensor itself does most of the work, it requires a person to operate it thereby putting said persons' olfactory nerves in jeapardy.
Here's something that should help your boss out, the guy was looking at the 2k maf as well but did it for $900 instead. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99842&highlight=maf+3.2
Yes I did. Thanks VERY much. I forwarded it to the boss. I imagine I just tipped my hand how I spend my day.p o No:
