Ive got my 72 skylark convertible with my wimpy quiet single exaust, I would like to change that. whats the easiest way to do something like this (besides bring it to an exaust guy) and if thats the best way to do it how much should something like that cost

Cheapest method would be to talk it to and exhaust shop. Cost depends on mufflers, and if you want it turned down before the axel, or going all the way back.

If going all the way back, make sure they don't have the pipes straight out, make sure they turn them down a bit.

I find it pretty cheap if you show up with your own mufflers.

Preopstud, I have a set of pipes that go into the muffler that I'll be getting rid of soon. They have the headpipes off the exhaust manifold already welded on. With my new engine having headers I won't be needing them anymore, so if you're interested I'll make you a good deal on them. All you would need is the mufflers and tailpipes, if you aren't going to be running dump tubes. I'll post a pic here.

I believe the reason for turned down exhaust tips is because straight pipes will turn your bumper black. As a car drives along, a vacuum is created behind and sucks in debris. Turning it down moves into the airflow under the car.

Preop, I recently made the switch from single to duals on my 70 350 and with all new pipes and mufflers it was under $500. runs, looks and sounds great. My buddy also did his '69 GS400 ragtop and it ran around the same price. Good Luck!

in 1970 , i ordered in a new mailbu with dual exhausts . before the exhaust system was a week old, i removed the tailpipes & the resonators from the car and stored them . i bought a pair of drop pipes and installed them in place of the tailpipes . the drop pipes allow more noise & thus a little less back pressure .
there are a couple of drawbacks to using these pipes. firstly , there is the danger of lethal carbon monoxide gas leaking into the car . secondly , the tips of the drop pipe will eventually rot off allowing hot exhaust to continuallly strike the rear axle assembly .

u should also purchase a new pair of correct mufflers hangers and tailpipe hangers from year 1 .
