I got a little agressive with the pedal the otherday and started loosing control of Buwicked in second gear. let off the gas when she was sideways and the chasis unloaded pretty hard to one side. Instantly heard a clunking and whining sound from the rear. This is a gm 10 bolt posi with 3:73 gears. Had to call the ole flatbed. Car will move - but rear clunks - whith both rear tires off the ground, in gear only the passanger tire spins. Havn't had a chance to look any further into it as my driveway is RCA - awaiting a new finish - and I am not crawling around on that stuff. Sooo - what do I look for - remove the cover - pull the wheels?? I have never dove into a rear so I need some help Thanks
Sounds like you may have granaded the clutches or cone in the posi, so now it is acting like a open rear by only turning one tire. Pop open the rear cover and see what you see. There isn't much going on in there so you should see pieces or at least be able to see what is clunking. Hopefully its the chunk or posi unit that went. If it is a cone style posi then it would be a good time to upgrade to a clutch style so you can replace the clutches when needed.
The good news is it should be an 8.5 so parts are available. Might be a good time to step up to 30 spline Moser axles and Eaton Posi like I did.
Sounds like you might of done the same thing I did to my Grand National , sounds like a broken axle.......
Chuck, Get it up on jacks stands, put a catch pan under the rear and pop off the cover. after the oil is out of the way take pics of the broken pieces that you'll have pulled out from the bottom of the pumpkin. . .No matter what, sounds like the rear is toast (repairable no doubt, but toast) I can help you in the mornings if you need...:TU:
Thanks Guys - I will probably have time to get a look at it this weekend And a special thanks to JR Wills - who took the time to PM me some very helpfull knowledge..... Go ahead and place your bets.............LOL........ I say broken lug nut..........HA... I drove it about 80yds today and got it into the rear garage - and it didn't make much of a fuss..... Yac - you still an Islander?? - thought you had moved on to greener pastures So far so good.....................p
You might've just broken up your brakes... Anyway, pull the wheels and drums first, and if no problem found, get out the drain pan and pull the cover, you will see all you need to see.
looks like I dodged the BIG Bullet............... <a href='http://<a href="http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/rack-attack/media/IMG_1172_zps07639c93.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t530/rack-attack/IMG_1172_zps07639c93.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_1172_zps07639c93.jpg"/></a>' target="_blank">http:// <a href='http://<a href="http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/rack-attack/media/IMG_1171_zpsd4895e3d.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t530/rack-attack/IMG_1171_zpsd4895e3d.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_1171_zpsd4895e3d.jpg"/></a>' target="_blank"> now on to the axles........................
I will check........are they supposed to be lock?? how does it look otherwise?? Havent gotten to the axles yet
O.K. - I need some help - axles are fine!! I cant find anything wrong with rear. Staring to question my sanity as to what I heard. Tires hit frame pretty hard and dented inner fender - I am wondering if that is what I heard. I know I heard clanking noises as I drove slowly afterward - tire is chewed up on inside - maybe a piece of rubber slapping around. My car is loud - so its hard to really hear well Rear was rebuilt only a few years ago - bearings look great - Can I just slide axles back in and bolt them on. Don't know what else to look for - may just put it back together and give it another spin??
Did you use synthetic fluid in the rearend? If so, the posi clutches will go berserk. It will sound like someone smashed your rearend with a hammer. Use non-synthetic fluid only + posi additive from your GM dealer. (Don't just use pre-mixed stuff from your local auto-parts store either) I don't think this is related to the problem you describe, but better safe than sorry. -Bob C.
Just to verify everything is as good as it looks. I would disconnect the driveshaft and turn the yoke by hand just to make sure it turns smoothly.
BUWICKED - Is back on the road and running as strong as ever! Rear end was fine - I did learn how to take it apart and put it together though - that was funou: when I am not so embarrased - I may tell you what it was.............................lol Thanks for all your help!!
