My hinges are a silverish color and have some over spray on them. I was looking at the Eastwood companies web site and I don't really see the right color to paint them. Anyone have any idea? Thanks!
Technically they are not painted. They are supposed to be plated. I had mine done thru Tri-Shield performance. ( Jim Weise). It has a name ( the plating) but I forget what it is called. Ken
i believe it is cadmium plating you are thinking of. You see a lot of cars that are gold cad. plating under the hood but the hinges and brake booster on my 71 are both silver color as you mentioned your 70 hinges are. If you want to try to paint them i believe Eastwood has cad plating paint systems where you use multiple paints to get the appearance of the original cad plating.
In 1972 when I worked at the GM plant in Framingham, my first job was hanging door hinges. They came into the plant is pallet sized wire baskets, dripping in a heavy oil. The metal was a dull gray, so the phosphate finish is correct. Hinges got painted later.
Paul he is talking hood hinges. They did not get the paint. I have nice orignals and the gray phosphate is pretty dark. They could have darkened with age. I keep them oily.
If you do end up getting your hinges phosphate coated be sure to wipe them down with a light oil on a rag once in a while as that particular coating will begin to show corrosion if not cared for.
I sent Jim W (Tri Shiel Per) a PM and left him a voice mail on his shop phone but haven't heard back yet. Hoping to hear back from him soon.
If you just want to paint them, Seymour paint has a High Temp Cast Blast aerosol that is a very close match to the factory grey phosphate plating.
Factory finish was actually Zinc phoshate plating which did oxidise and get darker with time , when you sand it you will see the lighter shade- Eastwood has exact match for this paint http://www.eastwood.com/ew-zinc-phosphate-aerosol-12-oz.html They also have a plating system that a little lighter and shinnier than the OEM zinc Phosphate http://www.eastwood.com/ew-electroplating-system-tin-zinc.html Their clear zinc has a blue ting good for backing plates - boosters (put hightemp clera over for exact match of factory plating llook http://www.eastwood.com/ew-clear-zinc-aerosol-12-oz.html they also have black phosate for latchs, bolts etc here some pictures of my 71 Riv - all the finishes are Eastwood or factory, engine is Duplcolor - notice the starter wire cover (original zinc phosphate on that , some of the Markings haven'5t been put back, like the blue paper dot on the booster- you can see where it was)
If you are going to paint (I used Rustoleum High Zinc primer that I had laying around followed by a shot of clear), note that four items under the hood have the same finish. The two hood hinges, the upper alternator bracket, and the coil bracket. Match them up and the illusion works much better.
Manganese phosphate . I restored a set for a customer, that were powdercoated gold in the '70's :spank: . let me tell you That was fun to clean up.. DL
