What causes the steering wheel to go "off center"?

For the longest time my steering wheel was "straight". Now it is clocked to the right a fair amount. I could probably use an alignment, but it tracks true. Just wondering how and why and if it can be made "even" again.

Most likely a worn part somewhere. A wheel alignment shop will find it quite quickly. You have not hit anything have you such as a curb, pot hole or small animal?

Odds are that if it used to be straight and has gotten off center, it is something like a worn idler arm or maybe worn lower ball joints or upper A-arm bushings. Put it on jack stands and wiggle as much of it as you can. I'm betting you will find some slop and it will eventually result in some uneven tire wear.

If nothing is loose and it still tracks true, you can loosen the tie rod adjusters and move one side in and the other out equal amounts to get the wheel straight again.

If it points a little left at straight ahead, move the driver side adjuster wider and the passenger side narrower to move the wheel back to center. Reverse this if it points right at straight. Do it a bit at a time so you don't over compensate, 1/2 turn in on one side and 1/2 turn out on the other should be plenty to see what impact it has on center.
