Folks I am looking for a little advice on what brand stall converter people recommend, like, or have had good experience with. It will be going in my 71 skylark with a fresh rebuild from Wildcat performance(will have back soon:Brow: ). I have a rebuilt th400 with shift kit, 3:23 posi rear and its mostly (98%) street driven. I am running air and power drum. I will have HP and Torq numbers from Mike at Wildcat on Monday we are thinking it will be around 475-500hp, nothing too crazy. Its been suggested to get a 2000-2500rpm stall...with lots of choices what do you recommend? (Yes i spelt converter wrong in title) Thanks
Lots of choices. ATI and Coan are both reputable, and a host of others too. I'd seriously consider a switch pitch for a fun street car that see's limited strip use. I think they're hard to beat for a combo. such as Mike will put together for you. I use the GM-1 converter which is a 12" V-6 unit. You'd have the best of both worlds at the flick of a switch. :TU:
Hi, I've had a few lousy converters in the past. So this time around I decided to spend some bucks and buy a Coan for my build. I can tell from my experience that the difference is night and day. The coan drives like stock, yet I can stab it and it will flash to 3800-4000. I'm very happy with their product...expensive, yes but IMO... worth it. Lots of other good quality converter builders out there. In a nutshell, you get what you pay for. Jim
Jim and Steve, Glad to hear you guys like your Coan converters. I ordered a Coan 10" Max Perf (I think that's what it's called) w/ an approx 4000 stall with my combo. It's suppose to ship tomorrow, and I look forward to installing it.
Yes, Bob that's the one I have the Max perf. Good luck and let us know how it works for you. Sounds perfect for your set-up. What converter are you running now, and is the tranny a th400? Jim
Whats the part number on that converter??? I am currently running a BTE 10" and its pretty tight but would love for it to be tighter under the stall rating when I am running my G/V. Thanks
Jim, That was the same converter the Coan recommended for me as well. Only thing was he was not totally sure how it would do with my 3.55's and GV overdrive. When its engaged its like 2.77's. My cruise rpm's at 60 mph should be right at 2150-2200 rpm with it engaged. How does yours pull at those rpm's??? I just want to spend $900 bucks and have it feel just like my $350 BTE. Any info would be great! Thanks
Mine works great at lower rpm's. Don't feel any slipping at all. The only time I've noticed any slipping is in 3rd gear when I'm climbing a steep grade at a lower mph. Which is to be expected. I will tell you though that Coan built mine straight off my dyno sheet, which I think helped alot. With your set up I think it would be best to talk Art. The more info they have the better.
Gents, Thanks for the information. I will give the guys at Coan a call after I get my dyno numbers from Wildcat on Monday so i can tell them what I am working with. Mike
Thanks Jim sounds like a very nice converter! So ART is the guy to get in contact with huh??? What rear gears are you running??? Again Thanks!
That's who I delt with when I ordered mine. As for my gears....I'm running a 12 bolt with 3:31's. I'm sorry I didn't catch you name.:beer
Jim, My name is Ron...thanks for all the help! When I get some cash stored away I will give Coan a call and see what think would work behind my combo.
Jim, I'm also running a TH350. I went through Mike @ AM&P. He was able to take my build and send a dyno sheet from a similar build to Coan. Right now I have a 15 year old 10" built by a local converter shop. I bet technology has changed a bit in 15 years..
