Its time to replace the pads and shoes and hardware if needed. What brand is best and not made overseas?

    Thanks

Wagner Thermoquiet stuff is still mostly made in Smithville TN.

I recommend ceramic front disc pads, and riveted shoes.

QC52 for the front disc pads

    PAB246R for front shoes

    PAB242DR for the rear shoes

Last time I intalled these parts (about a year ago) the boxes said "made in USA"

Expect to pay a premium price.

Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten

Do ceramics stop better than semi metallic? I need all the help I can get.

In your case, semi metallic will stop better. The only real advantage that Ive seem with ceramics is that they make less dust so your wheels stay cleaner.

Is there a benefit of going to drilled, slotted rotors? Will this type rotor work with the OEM calipers?

For street/ highway driving, a quality semi metallic pad and a plain rotor will work just fine. If you want to start autocrossing it, that's a different story

Brakes have never been the same up front since I went with the 284 cam despite the addition of a vacuum canister. I am thinking if things were to be changed and improved now is the time since I will at least need to replace the pads and cut/replace the rotors. Calipers are original and I believe are still good.

Wow, I don't either! They use to advertise front pads or shoes both ceramic. Not sure what the deal is? Oh well I tried.

Also, if you look around, you can find a manual disc brake master cylinder and get rid of the vacuum issue. This may require a different proportioning valve and different rear wheel cylinders (and possibly the steel lines), but I have not done this type of conversion; I just know that these cars, when new, could be purchased with manual disc brakes.

    Thanks J,

Pads are only about $18 at Rockauto and they had decent rotor prices as well.
