Like to change the shocks on my 68 GS and curious what you guys are running and recommend for an entry to mid level shock. I'm guessing a Monroe or KYB would more of a direct stock replacement ride quality
The Monroes gasmatics that I could have bought 30 years ago. They still make them and they seem to work pretty good on my car. What do you want to do with your car? Carve corners, go drag racing or cruise the boulevard? What is your tire/spring setup? All of those could make a difference. Except for tubular front control arms and bigger sway bars, mine is mostly stock and has a nicer ride than my wife's Honda or my Tundra and it still handles very well.
Weekend cruiser that will see the odd open track night. How are you guys liking the KYB gas adjust? The Monroe gasmatics are the yellow ones correct
I think the KYB ride just fine. The caveat is when I bought my car the shocks and springs were completely shot, so I really have no point of reference of how the car should ride other than what I have now. I did a complete rebuild of the front suspension and QA1 and springs in the back.
I take every opportunity to bash on kyb. I used to buy em until I had one leak. Lifetime guarantee is what they promise but just try to collect on it. I'll NEVER buy another kyb. I'm saving up for a set of bilstiens. Summit has em for about $268 for a set. Not cheap but ill spend on good parts.
How do you like the Bilsteins? I am considering putting them on my car but do not want to make the ride any more harsh than it is.
Yes, Buick went with the disposal shocks on all four corners in '56... I was tongue in cheek , of course.
I'm using the KYB Gas-a-Just shocks for both front and rear. I have no issues with these shocks, they work well. Tony
I like them very much. I think that they have a nice driving "profile" in that for small bumps they are firm but not harsh. They are quite enjoyable and firm when needed. Best shock I've ever used.
It seems I'm not the only one running KYB Gas-A-Just. They're firmer than the previous Monroe Sensatracs (also great shocks by the way) but the ride is still good.
Thanks for the input guys! After the money spent on the new drive train this year I'm trying to find something decent for a reasonable price
Ran KYBs for the first 10 years 20K miles or so and did not have a complaint. Installed a set of Bilsteins about 5 years ago and don't see ever going to another brand! Would have never though a shock change would make such a difference in ride and drive feel but the Bilsteins did.
