I was installing my powerglide today and while tightening the side middle bolt, the housing cracked. The crack runs beneath the bolt and is so that i can remove the transmission and the bolt and a small piece of the housing would still be attached to the block. What must I do? Can it be welded in place? Will it need to be removed and welded? Will I need a new housing?

    Your help is greatly apreciated

I don't see why you couldn't get it welded by someone thats good with aluminum. When I was overhauling mine the case fell off table and hit the floor and broke a chunk off with a bolt hole and had it welded up with no problems. I made sure it was perfectly flat where it mated to block. Used a file on it to flatten it back out. Why exactly did it break? did you crank down on it and tranny was crooked a little? I usaully just get close to snug on all bolts and then tighten them up.

It should be no problem to have the pieces bolted to a flat plate for alignment and welded up. As George said though, you have some root cause analysis to do as to how you got there to begin with.

Root Cause...Long story short...ashamed to say but the converter was not back far enough. No damaged was done to it though, nor to the pump, Thank God. Lesson Learned. A local transmission shop will tig weld it for me, he said it will be stronger than before.

Good you figured it out, Mike. I did the same once and broke a front pump. I got more careful afterwards too.
