What’s this from?

This issue with oil on the plug threads has been with me from build to build, it was only on a few plugs, now it’s on all of them. The plug coloring looks fine to me, they’re all the same, thats one of the things I’ve noticed about the SP3 verses the Stage 1 intake, the air/fuel distribution is more even.
The only common denominator with the oil on the plug threads is my headso_O 57F35997-B729-4437-8A99-60E614D82DE9.jpeg

    File fit the rings?
    Valve guides or seals maybe.

It's on the threads, not the plugs. Valve covers leak?

    alec296 i need another buick

That is escaping horse power. Quick get it back inside the cylinder. I would think valve seals or PCV issues

Yep all rings were file fit specific to their cylinders, this issue has followed multiple builds so Im suspect of the heads.
No smoke whatsoever out the exhaust, never has been.
Im curious how liquid oil stays on the threads, AND exactly how its entering.
I'd think intake guide, 'cause oil would get sucked in, BUT it would burn with the mixture creating blue smoke, and being it would burn, their wouldn't be any liquid oil left to creep up the plug threads. I doubt thats it.
Exhaust guides, any guide leakage there would stay in the exhaust port and smoke in the exhaust.

Better get those TA alums on order quick....
I had one plug with just a trace of oil on the threads. I thought valve covers too...nope they are sealed.

No valve cover leaks at all.
That's what perplexes me, years ago it was just a couple plugs, I put new plugs in this morn. and the oil is on every plug thread now.

I would think that too, but I don't have normal issues:p:p:p
I believe IT DOES have something to do with the heads, tho not the valve seals.

Was that with yer iron heads?

That oil has to be coming from outside the head. If it was getting past the guides/seals, it would be burned in the cylinder and get on the electrodes. I suggest you spray the threads in the heads with Gumout so you are sure they are clean, then install clean plugs. Clean the head really well around the plugs. Then see if it reappears.

Where else could it come from?

    Yes.
Doesn't the tapered seat keep the oil from getting down on the threads? It seals compression.

I think oil could eventually get past it. The threads and fit also seals the plug.

Guess its time for some new ALUMINUM heads:D
These old irons are choking me anyway:(

There is nothing wrong with the engine I get the same thing. How do you know the heads are choking the engine can't you spin it to 7 grand?

If you and I have the same issue there is something going on with our heads:eek:
I do remember around a couple valve guides years ago ( remember these heads have been on multiple builds ) there was what looked like oil trying to ooze from a crack around a few valve guides, I never thought much about it at the time.
I had Michaels go thru the heads on this last build, he didn't mention anything about cracks anywhere, BUT I never mentioned any concern, so he never would have checked.
My concern now is the oil is on all the plug threads so obviously the issue is getting worse.
I "think" its getting worse from the roller cam's quicker valve action verses a flat tappets smoother slower actiono_O
Whatever the case, it concerns me, maybe I'll give Michael a call and pick his brain.
I have two more sets of iron heads, my original '71 castings with seats installed (was told its chancy going bigger valves with hardened seat installed)
Also have a set of '78 castings.
My ass puckers spending money on irons, tho it would be cheaper than aluminums with 2.02/1.60 valves and the 700.00 porting upgrade which is what I would go for.
Im thinking full bore aluminum, who knows whats going to happen to our hobby down the road, with tracks closing and all:(:(

Were they ported at all ??

I don't know I went back and looked at all of the times I ran down the track and I couldn't believe how many times I wrote down that I hit the rev limiter at 6400 when I had the TA 510 cam in and that was with the D/P intake.
