Would be nice to know dry weights of the various transmissions available for sale on the board. Would make determining shipping or drive to pick-up decisions easier. Anyone know these weights?

Looking for the :Smarty: of all :Smarty:'s! (Teacher)

Without any conveter or fluid these are the stock weights. There was a myth that a TH400 was 30 pounds more than a th350 but that is not true.

These weights are a stock factory trans, aftermarket rebuilt trans may be lighter or heavier

    TH350- 125 lbs.
    TH400- 134 lbs
    2004R - 130 lbs

remember to add weight fo rthe pallet and shipping packaging... Ship by train if possible as it goes by space usually... Only cost me $120 to get a pallet with 700 pounds of Buick 350 stuff shipped 1000 miles by train!

I agree, and when someone sells you a trans and says the fluid has been drained.... Do not trust them or you might end up with trans fluid all over your cloths, shoes, etc... Funny I am 130 pounds myself and I was carrying the th350 by myself, silly guy I am....

Alan, not only one Nad hitting the pavement don't forget the broken toe when the torque converter you forgot to take off falls on it.

I shipped a T56 trans last summer. Used Fed-Ex. I bought the largest Rubbermaid container with removable top lid that you can find in Home Depot, and created wood cribbing that essentially locked-out all movement when the container moved in all directions and then I screwed the lid to the container and taped over the lid seams and screw heads. Final shipping weight was 142lbs and the cost was around $120 dollars I think. The funniest part was me and the Fed Ex guy at the office trying to get that giant container up on end so that it would fit on his scale.

That is so funny! I did the same thing one time.... Bought a trans from a guy but it still had fluid in it, big mess when he pulled the extra yoke he had out of the trans... I ran into the store and bought a massive rubbermade like you did and we put it in there... That was 5 years ago and the trans is still in there LOL! I would have to move about 6 trans to get to it, I should stop buying th400 trans... I must be a hoarder!

Same deal with some Buick 350 heads I bought myself for X mass, the lady at the post office said "what the heck is in these boxes???" half an engine I said with one on each shoulder... Same deal, why I need to have 20 sets of 350 heads.... I have no idea LOL!

Travelling by buss with Buick 350 heads in a packpack so we could do R&D to put SBC roller rockers on them.... Ditching the girlfriend to do the trip, good times.

The best was shipping by train I got 850 pounds of Buick 350 and parts on a pallet all shipped accross the country for $130!

What good is a trans with no oil and no converter? My Switch Pitch TH400 with
the converter and 3 gallons of oil weighed 215 lb; the TH425 FWD 265 lb. Bruce Roe

Good point.... But I think in this case it is shipping weight he is asking about. Most of us would not bother shipping a stock converter, if it was an aftermarket one then sure.

The bottom line is that there is very little difference in weight between the most common trans (th350,th400, and 2004r)... The packaging/crate is going to make more difference in weight than which model the trans is.
