I replaced the leaking water pump on the 455 2 weeks ago.The pump I replaced was less than two years old.I figured instead of a $30.00 rebuillt pump i would pop for a n.o.s. pump in the hopes of increased longevity. Now for the past few days I am hearing knocking noise that i believe is coming from the water pump. When i popped the belt off,no noise. I even tried a spare alternator thinking that was the problem.I do run a flex fan which I know beats up the pump.Could the bearing in this new pump be bad?? Check the AC compressor. Check every piece and pulley that turns with a belt. I did this with my LeSabre....I thought it was the brand new pump, so I started to pull it back off, and then I turned the pump in hopes of hearing the noise. Nada.... So I assumed it was the alternator. Nada. I finally ran my hand across the AC compressor and turned it. BINGO!
Nick, If the bearing is bad, the pulley will wobble as the engine is running. With the engine off, grab the pulley and try to move it side to side. If it's bad it will be obvious. The bad bearing eventually wipes the seal and it leaks out the weep hole. Hope that helps.
Thanks Adam & Larry for your quick replies. The pulley most definitly wobbles when moved manually as described. So much for the n.o.s. pump! BPG member #1473 Nick Rabi 72 Centurion Convt. 455 96 Chevy Caprice 9C1 68 Ford Mustang ( wifes car!!)
Stupid me!ou: Two of the fan mounting bolts were loose.I tightened them all & sounds good now.Hope I did not trash the pump bearing.Gotta stop workin' on this stuff at 2:00am:sleep: BPG member # 1473 Nick Rabi 72 Centurion Convt. 455 96 Chevy Caprice 9C1 68 Ford Mustang ( wifes car!!)
