I was wondering if anyone had the identification number on a 455, mine is a 70 455 but for some reason the water pump pulley does not line up:Dou: . I am wondering if maybe somehow I ended up with a 350 pulley:confused: . The pulley seems to be about a half inch (rough guesstimate) too much to the front. I read on one of George Nenavich's site to notch water pump to make work but I would rather get the correct pulley. I would like to have the part number so I could dig one up off a land yaught.

Any help would be appreciated :Do No:

    Thanks,

I think you have the exact same problem I had this past weekend. I installed a non-ac water pump and the pulley grooves were out of alignment. Purchased the correct water pump and everything was sweet as honey.

does this look like the one that would work on your application?

I unfortunately will have to pull it back off as I canot see part number with it mounted. I will look at it this weekend (Pull it off). I will see if it has those numbers TXGWILDCAT match mine. My question is that pulley for a 455 or 350???:Do No: ? Army Guy when I purchased the water pump I stated for an A/C car 455 and thats what the parts place gave me. Do you know the part number for the correct water pump(455 w/A/C)?

Let me know guys and Ill have some part numbers that are on those parts this weekend.

    Thanks,

I wonder if this project ever be completed:ball: LOL

the only number I know is for a remanufactured pump from Simco and the number is 1435. Murrays had to order as they didnt stock it.

As far As I know, the 350 and 455 use the same pulleys. The difference is either a long shaft water pump, or a short shaft. The 350 used a short shaft, 430 too. 455 with air used long, w/o air used short. My guess is that you have a air conditioned (long shaft pump) 455, and your pulley is from a short shaft.

    Guys,
I just pulled my fan blade off and looking at the water pump it apears to be long water pump. The pulley I have is stamped 1375146,if this is the short shaft pulley number im guessing the one above from TXGWILDCAT is the one I need as it looks more set back for my aplication. Sadly I have already blasted and painted this pulley but a minor set back. the part number on my water pump is 31033 do not remember who makes it from Autozone.

Im guessing I just need to change pulley???

    Let me know guys,
    Thanks,

    Where to start???

350 pulleys are NOT the same as 455's, that is why they have different numbers. The A/C pump is about an inch longer (toward the radiator) than the non A/C pump. Do you have A/C or not???

What year is your engine? I matters because the late 60's (whether A/C or not) used the SAME pump. #1375146 was used on all 400-455 from 67-70. Should be 5 5/8 OD 2 groove, so if you have an A/C pump, everything should line up. The problem could be the pump rebuilder pressed that peice on too far, or not enough.:Do No:

    Pulley

    Dan,
I am wondering if I have a frankenbuick lol. Yes the block was originally a 70 along with pulleys, but the car is a 71. Yes the car does have A/C. Everything looks to line up with the exception of the fan pulley. The waterpump is pressed looks to be correct but still not far enough back about one inch. I was wondering if the waterpump needs to be short shaft to line up???? I will see if I can get a deeper pulley from a land yaught (electra or lesabre). If that doesnt do the job I will try to find a short shaft water pump. Let me know if you have any other ideas. The car has the aluminum brackets and 70 power steering pump. Maybe just the 70 used the short water pump with either A/C or not

    Thanks,

If you think you could use the one I have pictured let me know.

    Hummmm

Does the pump pulley need to go further back toward the engine. If so, I suspect the piece was NOT pressed on the pump shaft far enough. A picture would help. I have two short pumps, but they will NOT help you. You do need the long neck A/C pump. I also think you are waisting your time trying to work with the pump you have. I'd buy a new A/C pump from somewhere else!:Smarty:

    Two depths of water pumps

Had a pulley misalignment on Shari's 1970 GS 455, when the counterperson at NAPA used his computer system to look up the water pump replacement, instead of using the book.

It seems their computer system only goes back to 1971 and the water pump depth had changed between the two years. I'm assuming you could get a 71 water pump pulley, but I took the unit back to get the correct water pump for the car.

Since then I only go to parts jobbers that know what they are doing and use the chains for consumable parts. Fortunately the failure rate of the better replacement parts is nearly zero, although they may cost a little more.

    Guy's,
I figured it out the pulleys are along withthe block a 1970 and the car is actually 1971. Yes there is a difference and on 70 the correct water pump is the same for the earlier 400. I took back the 71 longer and with the 1970 everything is lining up ok just had to put spacer on intake for alternator bracket, the Kenne Bell aluminum valve covers just a little too tall. I am starting to see light at the end of the tunel hopefully will crank over soon. Then comes the fun stuff body and interior.

    Thanks Everyone,
