    Howdy,

    a buddy just replace the water pump on his 61 401 because it was weeping water. Well now the water gets into the oilpan and fast if you run it with water in it. Because he's thinking about selling it he's just letting it sit. What is the problem? He says he had messed around with takeing the pump off and putting water to the waterpassages with hose and nothing leaks but when he runs the pump, he gets water in the oil.

    Thanks,

    I believe the bolts that go trough the timing cover into the block require a bit of sealant on them. Might not be enough to leak when sitting, but when pressure is introduced, they may seep.:Do No:

    or there's a much bigger problem somewhere...

    Check all the bolts for proper toque (or reasonably close) and sealer on any bolts that go into the block.
    ALso check to make sure the timing chain cover is not cracked or porus. It may let water through when under pressure.

    Last time I had water in my oil, it turned out to be a blown head gasket. :Do No:

    water in oil

    The posibilities are these;
    cracked head
    cracked block
    blown head gasket
    corrosion has eat thru the timing gear cover
    leak past a bolt.
    First, run a good compression test. If all cyls are good, then look at the timing gear cover, bolts in the timing gear cover ect.
    With these sandwitch gaskets now , there is a possibility of gasket rot.

    Hi Guys,
    I always look for cause and effect. Put a new water pump in and now the engine gets coolant in it? The gasket that goes between the timing cover and block may have failed when the bolts retaining the water pump were removed. I wouldn't rule that out!

    He ended up selling it but we are pretty sure it was the bolts not being sealed since his responce to them needing to be sealed was "what? Oh... didn't do that".
