Watch out for undersized rear main seals

A friend of mine replaced a leaking rear main seal(neoprene type) in his Stage 1. The new seal leaked like a sieve. He got back to the vendor(a reputable one) and bought two more sets.He was thinking that the installation was screwed up.The replacement seals arrived and a new set was installed. There had in fact been no mess up in the previous installation. The car is now dry as a bone.It was discovered that the first replacement seal set was about a 1/16 thinner in diameter than the last installed set.The lip was not as pronounced as well. This is a bit maddening to say the least. The vendor cannot be blamed as the difference in size is not readily apparent. My best advice is to buy at least two sets-if there is a difference in size go with the set which will yield the tightest fit on the crank.Or you can go with the old standby rope seal which is what I did.I have not had a problem with same. The down side of the rope seal is the crank has to come down a bit for replacement.
Has anyone else ever had a problem with a bad seal as sold new? I wish I had the packaging to determine if there was a different manufacturer involved with the defective set. Rod

I had trouble with a replacment seal one time that didn't stick up above the surface of the block and cap at its ends so it would not have had any crush to hold it in place. It was a seal that was supost to fit without triming like the poston seal that has to be shortend up on its ends a little to get the correct fit. I was working in a engine machine shop at the time and when I got my first poston seal, my "boss" looked at it and said it looks just like a caddy 472/500 seal, he dug threw a box of left over stuff and found one and sure enough the name and numbers on the poston seal and the caddy seal were the same. I hope I just didn't let out a trade secret here lol. Tom

I put my 462 together 3 years ago and the rear seal has leaked like a sieve ever since. I lost oil pressure 2 weeks ago so the engine is coming out. One priority is to get the rear seal right this time. Ps; I think the pickup tube has come loose hence the oil pressure problem. Bummer Mike D.
