A 69 GS convertible showed up on ebay that the seller said he'd take $4000 for. The car looked like the same one that went for $16500 out of Miami. Anyway, ebay pulled the listing with a warning to not send any money through Western Union. The seller said he need the money asap and to send it through Western Union to an eBay depository where it would be held until the car was delivered and approved by the buyer and then eBay would release the money to the seller. It looked legit ..they used words like eBay Square Trade and eBay Financial Dept and eBay copyrights when sending the payment instructions. I actually exchanged emails with the guy where he told me I was approved and he chose me to buy the car and he need my permission to sell it to someone else if I didn't take it. . Luckily I sent it to eBay(spoof@eBay.com) where they told me Square Trade is used to settle disputes and there is no "eBay Financial Department" and that eBay holds no money during transactions. eBay said to use escrow.com if I wanted to conduct such a transaction. I emailed the seller and said I'd do it through escrow.com or, better yet, I'd drive to NJ the next day with a bank check in hand and inspect the car in person and close on the spot.I never heard back from him. This confirms to me that the old saying "if it seems to good to be true, it probably isn't" rings true again.

Same scam was run on a 69 RS/SS in Britain this week. A guy at work almost had his buddy send the money to western union. These guys are getting so good at this that it won't be long before we can't tell the difference between them and ebay/paypal, etc. :af:
