Put a dual exhaust on my '66 Cat yesterday. I bought a stock replacement system from "klasscollection" on Ebay. It fit up nice with only one minor alteration of the driver's side head pipe to get the flange to mount up properly. It isn't mandrel bent, but for $260 plus shipping for an aluminized pipe system including mufflers, I have to give it a big thumbs up. As no one makes a true mandrel bent system for a '66 'Cat, the only other alternative was to pay some big bucks for a custom system. The mufflers I got with the system are "turbo" mufflers. While they drastically improve the sound over the grandma single pipe system I took off the car, they just don't say "hello" quite enough. I'm looking for something slightly obnoxious. I don't want to rattle my windows, but I want to hear it pretty loudly when I step on it. With the mufflers I just put on, if I step on it I can hear it if I stick my head out the window, but even then the sound competes with the Carter pulling in air. So what would sound good on a 401 Nailhead '66 'Cat? A completely subjective question, yes I know. I'm trying to do this on a budget, so I'm not looking to spend on stainless. Just a decent aluminized case muffler that breaths good and gets attention when stomped on. What I put on looks to be a short case muffler, haven't measured it. It's 2 1/4" in/out and offset on both sides. Suggestions??
I had Magnaflows put on my 361" Chrysler way back when. Don't know what model they were, but they were 2 1/4", and offset on both sides, as well. A pretty generic glasspack, I think. I could hear them quite well inside the car, but they had an annoying drone at cruising speed. After 2 years, though, they had worn pretty well, and were loud enough to set off the local ricers' car alarms.
Hey Ken..I was going to say "glasspacks" or those straight thru "Thrush" woody woodpecker buggers..but on second thought ,that was great when we were kids.. What about the small case "Super Turbos"??? Later,Tony.
Do a search for Flowmasters on Ebay, they are some people selling knock offs of the 40 series for a lot less than the originals, the shorter the case the louder they will be.
For the "Hello" without a "HELLO!!!!!!" I like Dynomax Super Turbo's. They have a very nice burble at idle, and really open up when YOU want them to. Should be around 35-40 dollars a piece through Jegs or Summit. Im currently running 30 series Flowmasters on my GS, and they sound great, but they are flowmasters... so everyone has them.
I agree, the Dynomax Super Turbos. Im putting them on my Electra, roll into the shows with a very nice rumble and scream out. :Brow:
Thanks for the replies, guys! :beer It looks like a choice between Flowmaster 40's that can be had on EBAY for $60 including shipping versus Dynomax Super Turbos that I can get from Summitt for $40 plus shipping. So, almost the same price. I may have to go with the super turbos as I am more a fan of that sound than the flowmaster sound. Too many Mustangs out there with Flowmasters.... Thanks again!
I really liked the sound my car had when I had blown out the mufflers and put some wire on them to keep them together; the car sounded like a real hot rod. I then put on the dynomax (don't know what model) and I couldn't hear the car. I want something louder again :-(
Glad to "hear" that Ted! :TU: Kimson, maybe you had the long case mufflers from Dynomax??? o No:
Ken , I used the short case super turbo's on my cat and used cheapo summit glass packs aft of the rear axel in place of the factory resonators to take out some of the bark. It has a nice rumble to it with out being obnoxious during normal driving.
That's interesting Tom. The single exhaust (replacement) I took off had no resonator, just a muffler. I wonder if only the factory duals had the resonator?
Ken , I just checked the 66 chassis manual that I have and it shows the resonator on all the big cars weather single or dual exhaust. Just pop the mufflers in and if it is louder than you want , get a couple of glasspacks and mount them in place of the resonators.
Thanks for looking that up, Tom. I'd be happy to be starting with too loud and working backward from there. It's way too quiet now!
