o No: Hello Buick Friends, I have a gas gage sending unit needs replaced, so today I droped the tank. I am thinking of replaceing the tank with a new, rebuilt, remanufactured or nice used one. Any suggestions from you Nailhead Gurus as to what to pay and where to locate.:idea2: Thanks in advance, Bill Bailey 65 Buick GS HT.
I wouldn't use an old used tank. At this point they're too old. Go on eBay, they're available for around 175. For a sending unit, contact through this board Robsbuick, he has really great units!!
Rockauto.com has the Spectra tank listed, GM37J for $154. It doesn't specify if it''s for AC or not... Always check shipping costs before buying.
:TU: I called RockAuto today and ordered the Spectra Premium GM37J fuel tank suggested to me by Walt K. I found the salesman named Jeff to be very polite helpful and professional. I will post after I get it, and let you know how it goes in. Now I may need a sending unit. Thank you all. Bill Bailey
I would contact Patton Glade through the board and buy a set of his gas tank pads. I think thats the right name. Can someone verify Patton's screen name so he can get in touch with him?
Here is the thread for the repo gas tank pads: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=136275 Bill, let us know how you like the tank!:TU:
:bglasses: JOE, surprisingly my old pad is in really good shape, I plan to reuse it since it is already to go back on. I contacted Rob about the fuel sending unit, his reply was I was misinformed about him having them. Thanks anyway, Bill Bailey
Huh? Oh maybe he only has upgraded units. If you look on ebay, you could probably get a tank and sending unit from the same guy to save on shipping?
o No: Joe, I already ordered the fuel tank, I am needing the fuel sending unit since I found out mine is bad. I may try e-bay, unless someone has a better idea, Thanks again. Bill Bailey
I spent a lot of time trying to find an in tank fuel level sending unit on E-Bay today. No luck. Bill Bailey
Bill, Rockauto has them listed. Made by Spectra...same as the gas tank. Avail in 5/16" or 3/8". 5/16" is stock. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1319363,parttype,4436
:TU: Thanks Walt K, The unit I see on the webb page, appears to have only one 5/16 fuel line. My old one has two lines one 5/16" line and one 1/4", one is a pressure line from the tank to the fuel pump and one is a return line back to the tank. When I ordered the tank, Jeff the salesman, said they didn't have the senders, maybe I didn't make my self clear. I may give them a call, anyway thanks again, I appreciate your help. Bill Bailey
o No: I did call them today and the salesman was good enough to call the supplier to ask if there was two lines on the unit, He called me back, they replied no, just one, so I may try to find another source. Maybe Year One???? Thank you all. Bill Bailey
That was a tough one Bill. But I like a challenge! I checked a few A-body suppliers, and found one at Performance Years (Pontiac). #GMR93 "fits 65-66 with AC and 67 all. Has extra tube for the return line." $89. It does not say if it is 5/16" or 3/8" Double check with them to see if it's the same as the Buick. Here's some info from my 1940-74 Buick parts book: Group 3.107, pn 6427584 fits 65-67 with AC My 66-only parts book shows pn 6425582. That number must has been superseded by the 6427584. www.performanceyears.com :TU: Oh, and join us at the forum on www.65GS.com
:ball: Walt K, I tried to enter the part #'s on the pontiac site, it kept coming back no item found. I have done some reworking of my old unit and will see if I can get by with it until later. Thanks for all your research and advise, Bill Bailey
 I received the tank today at about 2:30 PM from FED EX, I was so excited to get it, I took it from the deliverer's hands without giving the carton a look. When I got it to the garage, I noticed some holes in the carton. This carton looked like heck. I unpacked the tank and looked it over, the fill tube had been bent and the solder was cracked in two places. It also had a bent flange that went into the side of the tank, I took a vise grip to it and bent it away from the tank. I called my friend who always gets me out of jams. I then took both tanks, old and new up to his garage. He re bent the filler and re soldered it. I had a heck of a time getting it installed. The straps were not fitting like the old tank, so I finally got them started. I used my old fuel sending unit, after I reworked it and it went in fine. I hooked all fuel, vent and return lines wires and clamps up. Filled it with 5 gallons of 91 octane. Went for a test drive. Checked for leaks. The gage is working it shows 1/4 tank. I will add more fuel tomorrow, and check again. This is an experience I never want to do again. :ball: If I had another person it would have been a lot easier, and maybe better tools. Thanks for listening, Bill Bailey
I had to skip the tank pad, since it would not let the tank go up into the alotted area. I did use some roof seal for sound deadening. The tank looks good and doesn't leak. My old sending unit is working fine. I filled up the tank and found no leaks. I hope to post some pictures soon as I figure out my new digital camera. Thanks again to all of you good folks.
