Hi name albert ihave a1970 4dr. skylark 350 2v what's the best set-up too get great gas mileages? ray:
* A good tune-up, including recurving the distributor (see the "Power Timing your Buick" sticky thread. * Good front-end alignment. * Make sure the brakes are working properly and not dragging. * Inflate the tires to their max rated inflation pressure. Careful use of your right foot is then the biggest factor in fuel economy.
should i go with a200r tran swap and maybe some gear chanein the rear end,and use a thicker head gasket, 2 lower the compressition. also change dist.
Why? You should only have 9.0:1CR from the factory. Probably have 2.56 rear gears already. The simplest thing you can do (other than what's recommended above) is to use a vacuum gauge to change your driving habits. Dual exhaust might help if it's still single.
I have a 19 foot long, 4,000 plus pound Buick. Gas mileage is not a part of my Buick vocabulary, and I don't want it to be... LOL
With a 3-speed TH400 and a fairly hot 455, I can get 16-17 MPG on the highway. With a 350, if you were to add a 200-4R (w/ lockup convertor), I bet I could clock 25 MPG on a highway trip (after I spent a lot of time achieving the perfect tune, of course...) The OD and lockup would be worth at least 3 MPG (assuming your engine is in a perfect tune, especially at the low-end) if not more. Actually, I'd like to try for 30 MPG someday if I can find a 250-straight 6 car with an engine in good shape, those things were low-RPM performers. On the other hand, if you want to be radical, you could get a 231 turbo'd V6 out of a grand national. Those are also great MPG combinations, then you can turn up the boost for some great performance too. -Bob C.
i would agree with most thw best bang for the buck is a 200r4 tranny with lock up it is good for an average of 5 mpg ...as much cold air as the car can get modify the air clean set up good flowing exhaust good curve kit and vacuum advance hooked to manifold vacuum it will able you the car to close the throttle plate some and maintain great idle quality and last on the list would be swap in a set of 2.56 gears my my lti roadmaster window sticker said 17 city 25 hwy in bold the little letering below that read 23 to 31 on average with minoe mods it get 27 with a best of 33 it does have 2.56 gears and is the key to economy once i get my 70 sky roadworthy enough i will br making a trip to my camp in northern maine it is 250 miles door to door i will post my hwy fuel economy i can bet with 3.23 gears a 200r4 i will get 20 to 25
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned a 4bbl carb as well yet. The smaller primaries help milage, again as long as you can keep your foot out of it. nate.
Moneywise: Convert your car to run on LPG :TU: ! It will use more fuel per mile, but I think it's cheap motoring you're after and not a high miles-per-gallon figure ? But you pay next to nothing for 1 US gallon of petrol, so who cares about mileage....
A ghettofabulous homemade HHO kit could give a few extra mpg as well. I'm going to try it out in the future...
I wouldn't bother.:Smarty: If you talking about the kits that use energy from the alternator to produce hydrogen. You aren't creating any energy by doing that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_fuel_enhancement There's a LOT of controversy, some people say they get no results, some people say they get great results. Here's a few articles for reference http://blog.automotivetroubleshootingsecrets.com/uncategorized/hho-generator-tips/ http://www.acura-legend.com/vbullet...r-fuel-combustion-efficiency-any-good-119687/ http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1771696/hho_mileage_test_hydrogen_generator_fuel_cell_kit_mpg_results/ http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1719422/hydrogen_fuel_system_hydrogen_on_demand/ http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2023095/how_to_save_fuel_hydrogen_on_demand_controlled_experiment/ Personally, I wouldn't pay for one of the expensive kits out there...I'd make my own.
I most always get (highway) 22 MPG (combined is about 20 MPG) on a 2ton 68 lesabre (orig. buick 350)with a good tuneup in original tuneup, the engine timing is critical, read the "power timing your buick" thread. Good tuneup includes (atleast) good carburetor & good ignitiont, disty, wires, plugs. I use recurved disty with lectric limited module, mallory wires, nology plugs and 42 BTDC total timing.
