Doing a restor on a 70 gs455 conv. Has anyone ever seen insulation inside of the cowl on the outer walls?
Re: cowl insulation Thanks, Do you know if someone repops this? and is it worth trying to remove and replace since it's pretty hard to get to. Does not look like it's deteriating - see picture. Passenger side looks like it's falling a bit but cannot reach to pull up without pulling blower motor box.
Take it out and leave it out. All its going to do is cause rust. Either by holding water or falling to the bottom and plugging the cowl drains.
That is wet crud by now. I used the dynamatt type stuff and just cut it to fit and pressed it in place on the body structure. Provides a good sound barrier there and on the floors as well. I used the Eastwood brand. The old stuff was fiberglass and that stuff is not good to breath. Your vents could blow microscopic fibers all over the cabin. That is most like what has happened all along with that stuff. Nice to be rid of it.
Al that dirt clogs the drain holes and causes rusts. Good to be rid of it. ---------- Post added at 05:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:05 PM ---------- I was looking at your picture closer. Is this the insulation that is inside behind the kick panels? Or is this the stuff that was glued to the underside of the metal part of the dash? The stuff that is glued under the metal dash is available through Ames Pontiac. It is a newer type fabric material. You glue it in place with 3m Heavy duty glue so it stays put. It goes over the top or the steering column support as well. They also have the nice rubber and fabric firewall pads as well.
This is acually inside the cowl. On the passenger side I could reach from where the blower motor mounts and used a vac to suck out the pieces that I could not reach with my hands. On the drivers side I was able to pull out the entire peice by reaching inside cowl where wiper transmission arms are. It is glued to the outer wall of Cowl. As you can see in picture the vents that feed the kick panel vents.
