I have set my TH400 to shift @ 5500 rpm in drive , I used kit #K018 from Shift Technology products . Using inner weights B & E / 14.3 &7.1 g/ total weight 19.4g / I used the springs that came in the governor from the stage 2 TSP trans built by Jim Wiese. Specs for the springs are .950 free length / 9 total coils / .020 wire Dia. This combo ended up yielding a 1-2 shift of 5500 rpm & a 2-3 shift of 5500 rpm.

With the trans shifting @ 5500 by it's self, If I want to manually short shift out of low @ 5200 would the governor have to be set @ or lower than 5200 rpm @ WOT to allow this ?

Sorry, but the governor will be the deciding factor at wide open throttle even if you select low and attempt to shift early. To get a short shift, you'd have to close the throttle a bit, which raises manifold vacuum, bringing the modulator into play.

You may in fact find that selecting low raises the WOT shift point a bit due to a slight increase in line pressure in L1.

Thanks Devon for your reply , before changing my governor settings my shifts were 4600 & 4800 rpm . I would shift my trans manually @ 5200 1-2 & 5500 rpm @ the 2-3 shift. Jim W told me he feels the extra band apply & pressure lets the trans last longer if shifted manually.,in order to shift @ 5200 rpm I have to shift @ 4800 on the tach to see 5200 @ the shift ,seems to be over lap in the shift , let me point out that the shift is nice & crisp & NO slippage . When left in drive the shifts are right on the money 5500 bang 5500 bang no lag on the tach what so ever. I think the valve body must take a little time to make the shift when shifted by hand . Any body notice this on the TH 400 ?

    Thanks , ick

Just curious, do you have a shift reprogramming kit already installed? If so, do you remember which one?

Devon ,It has a Trans Go stage 2 kit in it . I just added a little more weight /same springs & it dropped from 5500 rpm to 5200 rpm. the weight for the 5500 is .60 oz. & 5200 rpm .65 oz. The governor that came in the trans shifted @ 4800 1-2 4600 2-3 total weight was .70 oz. Devon after the setting @ 5200 I can now manually shift @ any rpm wot above 5200 . My engine pulls hard to about 5500 -5700 rpm I like to have control of my 1-2 shift just incase it does not hook up out of the hole it won't hammer 2nd gear & then hook & shift into low.

Mark, that sounds perfect. When you described the behavior I was wondering if you'd installed a kit, that explains it. In my opinion the TransGo kit is excellent.
