Vinyl top question

I yanked out my rear window and was cleaning it up, and I see that the edges of the vinyl are stapled to the steel of the window frame. HUGE STAPLES, going right into the metal to hold the stupid top on.

They are only around the top edge, and drop into the corner, but still.

Which brainiac figured this would be a good idea anyway? Why?

    Just, why? :Do No:

    Never seen that before.
    What car is this on?

67 skylark. That particular picture is the passenger side corner, right as it starts to round down to the side panels. It isn't rusty up along that edge where they stapled it all, but all those holes just wicking water inside is amazing to me.

Oh well, point, aim, click, spatter, grind. all gone.

Yep, the staples are there courtesy of GM. Before you chastise the manufacturing methods, keep in mind they were in the business of building and selling cars at a profit and had no concerns at all about customers 45 years later.

I think it's because the nails weren't holding.
