Hi, I wanted to bring my old vinyl top back to life. It`s the original one, good in shape, but the black seems to be fading at some points, getting a greyish look. How do you guys take care of your vinyl? Any good ideas?Heared about folks putting peanut butter on? Does anyone know about that? Wouldn`t that stuff just melt right off in the sun, leaving streaks on the paint? Jens
I have used Mother's Back to Black for years on my vinyl top on my Mustang. It is actually clear and will work on any color top. Makes it look like new. Have to redo it every couple months or so, depending on how much it is out in the sun. I will caution you tho, if you plan on getting your car repainted, make sure you tell the body guy to use extra wax remover on the metal below the where the vinyl meets the rear fenders. Otherwise you will have fisheyes in your new paint. Ask me how I know!
the first thing you can do is get a soft bristle brush and give it a good scrub with a mild detergent, this will remove any dirt, sap, etc that will dullt he finish. then use a vinylex or meguires as mentioned befor...but you will get much better results if you give it a good cleaning before. Mike
Nothing will really get it back. Once it is that old it is on borrowed time. Think of an old mans skin and you will get the idea. Time for a new one. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer but it is what it is.
my 72 gs has a new vinyl roof and all i do to maintain it is to wipe it down with a soft damp/wet towel. i apply no chemicals to the vinyl surface.
Thanks for your thoughts and tricks. I know it`s not gonna get better and I bet there`s a little rust in the lower right corner below the vinyl, but I guess I`ll try the "Mother`s back to black road" for now and go with a new one in a year or two. Thanks again folks, all of you v8buick-guys help me keep my GS running around here in good old Europe! Jens
Attb, when you get a new one check with Kee auto Tops. They have the grain the I found is closest to original. I got it from Pro-Fit in Alabama here in the States. They gave me a better price than getting it directly from Kee.
My friend uses shoe polish to bring old tops back to life. I guess it depends on how bad the top is. But every time he's done it, the top looks fantastic. Im not sure how it wqill last if it rains, but something else to consider
Heard crazy stories about all kinds of pastes and oils on the vinyl.Seems to work, but I`m mostly afraid about 2 things: it will melt right off in the sun, leaving streaks on the paint, or it will never get off the top again (I can see myself scrubbing and curisng for hours in my garage!). So I guess I`ll give the "back to black" a try and will get a new one later.
Ok, just a little feedback. I got my Mothers back to black and the result is unbelievable. Guys, it hasn`t yet rained on it or any other bad influences but from what I see after the treatment...looks like new. Thanks a lot for all your help and advices.
