I'm looking at a car in Mo. seems that the last digit of the engine # is is just one off from the Vin #

    Vin#446176 B106390

    Eng# B106389

What are the chances of a replacement eng years later being just one digit off from the original vin ? slim to none - what would be the reason for this - any help????

  2. Wow, one digit off... seems more likely to me that it was a goof up at the factory. A replacement engine would not likely have a s/n that close to your original #.

1966 Skylark GS form the Baltimore factory?

    Interesting question D ...:Do No:,

How did this work at the factory? Did they stamp the engine VIN after is was placed in the car, or was this done before putting it in? Maybe 2 engines were in the wrong place of the line-up? Maybe the guy in charge of stamping the VIN had a bad day?

Cars were produced and shipped to different dealers all over the US, what are the chances that a car with a broken engine recieves the engine from the car that was next in line and for some reason donated it's engine?

    I think it's a mix up at the factory...........

    i guess it's good news

seems like it must be an original factory engine - mix up at factory seems only likely reason for the numbers being sooooo close - thanks

    I'd say (with 99.9% accuracy)

BIG factory screw-up! Replacement engines did NOT get Stamped...So, unless someone replaced the engine (from the car that JUST happened to be 1 digit off:rolleyes:  ), otherwise you have the original.

Gee, we heard of build sheets being within a few numbers, now we have blocks!:error: :error: :error:

Oh, and they were certainly stamped BEFORE they were installed.:Smarty:

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

Does the trans have the same number? Be interesting to see if it "matches".

    Tran?

Good point Korrie, my guess is the trans will match the block.

    Re: Tran?

That would be my guess too, since the engine and trans were stamped at the same time during the assembly.

    buickman70 I pirated this pic!!!

At the plant that I work at the robot that stamps the engine blocks occasionally used to fault out and stamp blocks with the same vin. We then had to grind the number and restamp it.

    Rob,

Every time I see your signature I'm wondering what a Chaparral boat is? Can you post a photo of it please?
    Thanks :TU:

    WOW!!!!!

That's a beautiful boat Rob :TU:
I like the matching trailer colours, what do you use to tow it?

Thanks, I use a 99 Chevy Silverado 4wd to tow it, but I just got a receiver hitch for the Buick so I am going to try using it once the car is done. Power shouldnt be a problem and wont people be surprised when I back down the boat ramp in a GS455 convertible:Brow:

For the record, I have heard of factory blocks being 1 digit off before.
