I would contact the DMV in New York. They are capable of issuing new vin numbers although I dont know if your situation meets their criteria. And if it does, I dont know if you would get an actual new vin tag from them or just a new vin number.:Do No:

Personally, I try some Navel jelly and a shot of clear coat on the vin plate and see how it turns out.

hopefully you have the transferrable registration for your car-which is proof of ownership for a pre-74 car in New York state. Trust me, you dont want to set yourself up by asking the new york state dmv for a new vin tag!

You cant. The only thing DMV will do is issue you a NY State issued VIN with a big yellow sticker. The same thing they do with stolen recoveries. A state issued VIN will bring down the value of your car to almost nothing.

    How rusted is rusted?

What plant was the car built in? Here are some other places to look. The easiest is the blue door decal but it is often gone. If it is Framingham car check under where the blower motor attaches to the engine side firewall. It is often under it printed upside down. Just the last 6 digits will be there but it is easy to figure the rest. Flint cars do not have this I beleive. Also if you have orignal transmission in car look on the drivers side and it will be stmaped in on Automatics. Also if original engines in 70 have VIN near #1 and #3 Sparkplugs so do not give up yet. Also if you take body off frame look for VIN under where drivers door was.
