Is the VIN stamped or engraved on the frame of a 70 - 72 GS? If so is it easy to get at and check it, also does it matter if it's a GS 350 or 455.
Yes it is stamped on the frame below the driver door, but its a pain to see with the body on. There is also a stamping on the rear section of the frame behind the wheel. If you use a wire brush grinder, you possibly may find it,but it depends on how pitted or scaled the frame is. The part number for a big block frame is also different than a small block, but they will interchange with each other.
Someone on this site told me they just found their VIN in top of the frame behind divers rear wheel area above where part # is but I have also heard where Big Nasty said as well
If anyone has pics of that, I'm sure it would clear things up. Are the numbers general frame numbers, or the VIN itself?
Different. Frame part# and date code and maybe manufacturer like "HAYES" or "PARRISH" are on side of frame behind drivers rear wheel VIN itself is on top of frame in at least one of two different locations.
Maybe someone can help me decode mine ... The vin that came from the top of the left rail near the driver door is easy, 1H1nnnnn There is no way you could have seen it with the body on. But I could use some help with the details on the back rail HAYES (the manufacturer) 3992388 (part no., but what does it tell me?) 29711 (date code, how do I decifer it?)
That part # is for a Skylark or GS 350 in 1971. You can see it was made by HAYES just above part # Date code looks like February,9 probably 71. Cannot make out number after 7. GS455 frame # in 71 was 1237139
