44 is for the V8 Skylarks, no info about GS which was only a option package for modelyear 1965 Engine codes for the GS were LR and NA, both the 400 mill (that was a 401 in real life)
According to Dove's book, for 65 and 66(as with the later cars) 46 is Gran Sport. "44 " is Skylark v-8. Dan
Sorry...I must have some bad info....I was referencing the VIN Interpretation Chart in "Guide to GS Buick 65-75" from American Muscle Car Publications....showed the 44 and 37 as GS designators...... Thought this was reliable.... Sorry about getting your heart beating..... Ed
