    Howdy everyone, I've been fixing up a 66 skylark in Seattle WA. (Pics will come soon) I'm new to buicks and had a question on the VIN Decoding. I found some decoding online, but my VIN doesn't match up to the format.

    My VIN is 4441767Z110324

    I Read it as:

    4 = Buick
    44 = Skylark V8
    17 = 2 door hardtop coupe
    6 = model year (66)
    7 = THIS NUMBER DOES NOT FIT????
    Z = Fremont, CA
    110324 = production number

    Any help on that seven in there?

    That VIN isn't right mate, it should only have 13 digits, not 14 like yours.

    Skip the 7 and you'll be okay.

    Is this VIN in the car papers ?

    Check the little plate on the drivers side door hinge pillar, there you'll find a 13 digits VIN.

    In 1966 44417 was the code for a Buick Skylark 2 door hardtop with a 300 cid Wildcat 310 engine.

    I suspect you are looking at the scheme for another year . The scheme did change among the years except the first 4 still meant Buick.

    Z is Freemont and the remainder is the production number.

    6 is the year and I would bet Erik is correct that the 7 before the Z should not be there.

    That's what he also found out, Jim.

    4 = Buick
    44 = Skylark V8
    17 = 2 door hardtop coupe

    But he can't find out about that 7, because there only are 13 digits in a VIN for modelyear 1966, not 14

    * I see you edited the post while I was typing...:TU:
