    Hey Guys,

I remember a thread a few months ago about vibration. I have been chasing mine for over 10 years. Well, this weekend I figured it out. The original problem was a definite vibration type problem at 2500 RPM and 65 MPH. What it turned out to be is spelled out below. The basic problem is that an out of balance condition was created by loose bolts and a bad bushing.

    1. The bolts on my transmission tail housing keep comming loose, and that was a big part of it. I tightened the bolts and used lock tite and lock washers.

    2. The least thought about component in the car, the bushing in the tailhousing of the transmission. When the bolting loosened in the tailhousing, the side load on the bushing must have been terrible. After 10 years of loose trans bolts, it needed replacing.

I have tried lots and lots of things to correct the loosening bolts over the years but none have worked. I will be making and installing bolts with holes for safety wire next.

Just thought I would help out the other guys. This fixed my problem. I hope it gives others an avenue to fix theirs.

Yep--had that problem myself. It is especially prevelant on 3 and 4 speed manual transmission cars where not much of the lube gets back to the tail shaft busing. Vibration is worst when you let off the gas and coast down from highway speed.

We use safety wire on aircraft applications as a matter of course. Even the oil filters are sold predrilled for safety wire. Use of the safety wire is not optional. If drilling yours turns out to be any problem you might check with an aircraft supplier. They may already exist.

Also there is a prescribed technique for the way the wire is applied. If you look back at some old posts we posted pics.
Use the search term "aircraft safety wire." It is the second post.

    Did you replace the bushing?

Thanks for posting the info Ralph! The 4 speed is all freshened up, so I hope the issues I had are fixed.
