A while back I was down in LA to visit some friends and decided that this would be an opportunity to get a decent paint job on the cheap for my Regal. Before I headed down, I stripped all of the moldings off of the car, smoothed out the rough spots, patch primered the worked areas and scuffed the whole car. OK, you can picture the car at this point- 4 or 5 assorted colors, no chrome, stock wheels with no covers...it really looked like a POS. However, I had a fresh 455 under the hood that was mildly but nicely built and running SWEEET.

So here i am in the badlands of LA one morning, somewhere around Pico street or Bl. or what ever, and i'm in the fast lane at a stop and up next to me pulls up a new Corvette. Fella driving looks over and looks my car up and down and I can just hear him thinking " what a POS...." The light turns green and this guy takes off hard thinking that he's gonna show this lowlife what you need to succeed in LA sure aint a primered out old Buick.
It wasnt even close. Here's a guy who thought that being hot meant shelling out $$ from his paycheck every month instead of busting a few knuckles and knowing exactly where you scuffed the oil pan when you dropped the motor in.
ANYWAYS- I killed him. Dead. No question. I was waiting for him at the next light. Wouldn't even look at me. We took off hard again but as soon as I pulled him I shut her down and hit the Whoa! hard. He kept going full bore right over the RailRoad tracks and I heard the Scrreecrunch! and saw the sparks when he bottomed out. I always wondered what a new exhaust on a new 'vette costs....:pp :dollar: :dollar: :dollar:

By the way, got the car painted that week and while not the best, but all put together, she looked great.

sweet :beer After the asswhipping, he probably took it to the shop and told them it was broken because Corvettes are and always will be THE fastest cars on the road. I don't judge people before they get a chance to prove who they are but most vette guys have something to prove.

I have a new neighbor that appears to be a vette guy. He just built a brand new house and has a nice 3 car garage. So far I've seen from a distance, one new vette and one from the 60's. I hope he's a true car guy and not a typical vette owner...

    Nice kill.

there is this guy(lots of money) with a C5 vette heavily modded that runs the street legal program at our local track. Before i turbo charged the skymaro, he would always beat me by 3-4 cars. I got the turbo's and he said "It isn't going to do you any good". we lined up and..... well lets just put it this way, he sold his car:grin: I will say though it was one of the only vettes that could beat the skymaro when it was naturally aspirated.

Ive had quite a few Buick GS's and and 2 Corvettes. In my own experience the GS's are quicker and the Vette's are faster. red light to red light if you have a healthy motor in your GS's theres a very good chance of beating the Vette. Out on the highway at top end speeds the vettes are faster no question about it.

I would tend to agree with you ( stop throwing bottles at me guys!! ):blast: Lets take a look- the 'vette has been in production for about ~50 years as the Generals KOTH one and only true sports car. Uncounted millions in development, unique Everything ( even to the point of downrating the Camaro/TA so that the 'vette remained King.) low C.O.G. 4WIS, 4WDB, fender wells you could stuff a slick into and an incredible refinement of the basic 350. Stuff this ( more later ) into a very low COE drag body with a good underpan for lift/downforce, mate it with researched to death gearing, closer to equal weight distribution and yes you have a car that will top end most of ours anyday ( with exceptions...) Buicks were at best old man hotrods and if not, upper class family cars. You could get them optioned so that they were wicked mean, but they were not designed to be a world class sports car. Buick took some nice cars ( most of the time ) and added and tweaked so that they were fierce street machines, with the aerodynamics of a brick and undersized drum/drum disc/drum brakes, undersized rims/rubber, real ground clearance for real streets-apples and oranges. But good apples!!

As to the aforementioned stuffing, one of the worst deals I ever made was to a friend who had a 'vette. He had it dealer converted from a TH350 to a 5 speed and I wanted the 350 that came out. we struck a deal- I would do a tuneup including new plug wires and throw in $200 for the tranny. Did you know that the spark wires then ( 85?? ) were routed THROUGH the engine mounts!? I do now. I had to hoist the car up and then lift the engine from it's cradle, remove the mounts, R&R the wires and put the whole @#$% thing back together.:ball: And I never did get the tranny...:( My point is, take a mega-corporation BIG:dollar: :dollar: :dollar: $$$ and tell em to make a sports car and you SHOULD get something back.

But I could have a trunk full of stuff for the weekend, 3 friends - 4 if you like each other, and show the 'vette my taillites all the way to 120MPH. And my friends were there to see it in living room comfort and his car cost how much??

    I'd say we're even.
But if not, I've still got my 87 Turbo Regal.

fourfiftyfive My car is a mess........

    my personal favorite 'vette story-

I was riding around with my friend after he finished up with all his mods on a mitsubishi eclipse... he was looking for a race at a stoplight on the main drag and we pull up next to a yellow, convertible, C5 corvette. it was stock as can be and an automatic. The guy was looking over at us and I'm in the mood for a good laugh... so I slouch down not wanting to be seen in a rice-mobile and tell my friend to rev at him... so he does, the light turns green and a stock C5 ate the modded mitsu's lunch! My friend who constantly badmouthed american cars and V8s didn't even look at me or say anything... I was laughing so hard I couldn't speak... he actually thought he had a chance!!!

For the record- he's only still considered a friend because he respects my buick!!

    Great story...

...I would rather smoke a guy from stoplight to stoplight all day long than own a vette anyday...leave the nice handling and top end of 180+ to the european cars

Good story:TU: Killing a Vette is right next to killing a 5.0 Mustang. As far as Vettes go I won't knock them they are made by GM and they are a legend.
    in there time. IMHO.
