    sorry its a long one!!

Well I finaly got my 430 runnig and it fealt really good! a couple of days later I noticed the valve covers leaking so I took them off and put some sealer on. When I started it up I took it around the block to see how it felt. When I got back to the garage I heard a soud I dont think was there before. It sounded like a exhaust leak but it was coming from the mufflers. I also heard a very faint lifter noise.

That was a weak ago, Today I changed the oil and put in some Riselone, a lifter additive. well I let it warm up and the lifter noise was still there but after a couple of revvs it was completely gone. But.., the weird noise was still there I swear it sounds just like an exhaust leak from the mufflers but I dont think I ever heard it before.

The reason I had my car out of service for so long was because I had cracked my 430 heads. I ended up puting 455 heads on. I also did a mild port job on them it was my first time. And I lapped the valves. I have headers, intake, carb, and I really dont know what has been done to the inside of the engine. I have three inch mufflers bolted to the down pipe and thats it.

I know 3 inch is too big but I do intend to built it pretty good.

    thanks for any input, will
P.S. It has good oil pressure around 23psi warm idle 10-40

    new lifters

I put new 455 lifters and pushrods in when I got the 455 hreads on I also primed them. IS this a bad sound?

Check around your exhaust gaskets normally the rear bottom hole always blows out on me at least once per year, that bolt hole has a thiner wall then the rest of them.

I noticed you've mixed and matched 455 and 430 components. 430s oiled the top end through passages at the front and rear of the head, thus using solid pushrods. 455s starting in 1970 (I think) oiled the top end through hollow pushrods and redisigned rockers and shafts. Do you have the correct lifters, pushrods, and rocker arms for your oiling system?

  6. Have you tried a stethoscope to narrow it down?

    Dan is right

400 and 430 motors oiled the rockers through an oil passage in the block, up through the rocker stand, through the rocker shaft and to the rockers. The lifters don't let oil through, and the pushrods are solid with no oil passage.

455 motors oiled the rockers through the lifters and hollow pushrods. 455 heads and rocker shafts don't have the internal oil passages, so you have to use late model (1970 and up) lifters and pushrods. If you have the 430 parts on your car with the 455 heads your rockers are running dry which will certainly cause wierd noises.

TA Performance sells reconditioned rocker shaft and rocker assemblies for about $250 if you're in the market now...

If you use 430 heads on a late model (455) block you have to block off the oil passage in the block or you'll get no oil pressure!

So does this also mean that if I wanted to run any TA aftermarket aluminum heads on my 430 I'd need new lifters, pushrods, rockers and rocker shafts to run these heads?

I think you would need to change the lifters and pushrods. TA has hybrid pushrods to fit the 430 rockers.

I used the 455 lifter pushrods and rocker assemblies. I think I am going to frive it a little to see how it feels.

    thanks, will
