I put a low-mileage 302 in my Mustang, and 300 miles later on a freeway drive, it does this to the front two pistons!!! Needless to say, the original 289's at the machine shop right now. I though it was only me the internal combustion gods were frowning on.

Would you be interested in a 347 sbf stroker short block already assembled?

Aaron65 - You have my sympathy.

At least all my problems are kinda cheap.

Hope you can get the tranny back together. after your racing this fall the 400 with the switch pitch might wake the car up a little. Of course it will lead to wanting a little more power and that will lead to wanting a little more.:Dou: Of course that's the fun of it. I went with a 2004r and love it. Nice low end with nice hwy. cruising.

One of my flight instructors (during a night flight with multiple simulated emergencies), after I finally got things more or less under control and was landing at Worcester MA and reached for the landing light switch said "No landing lights". I said "For Christ's sake, Jim..." He said "Sh-t comes in piles". That's the way my life has gone.

I had about 9 hours of flight time before i realized I didnt trust machinery of any sort, much less at 3000 feet.

66, I'll be lucky to get this thing back together for this fall....lotsa travel for work this summer, and my kids and family are sucking up my weekends one by one!

I do think eventually I'll throw in the 400 though - If I can calibrate it like the one in my Pontiac! For whatever reason, that 400 beautiful - quick, but soft, shifts just where you want it, and kicks down like it's hard wired to your brain. Makes that big car feel about 1000 lbs lighter. The Kenne Bell 400 in my 73 is a whole different animal.

I want the best of both worlds, and I'm slowly figuring out how to make that happen. the 400 is a very tunable tranny.

While I'm on the topic, lets talk about yokes - I've never done this swap, and I'm told I may have to use a hybrid U-joint to marry a TH400 yoke to my 65 (and asssumedly small joint) driveshaft...anybody had any experience here? Doc?i

Thanks for the offer, but the 289's already out at the machine shop, and it's original to the car. I think a 347 would make short work of my 24 spline input shaft on the C4. :)

Good luck Rhett...hopefully our mechanical luck changes for the better! Mark my vote down for putting another ST300 in it...I've read (I think on this website) that a 400 soaks up enough power that your ET doesn't change much.

Nothin to it Rhett,,, You need a solid driveshaft anyway to handle all the tork,,,, i just use the trans yolk for the th 400 because that is all that will fit the output shaft.... and the front yolk should fit the u joint.... then cut the driveshaft allowing for the ''pumping'' in and out when the shaft /diff goes up and down.... about 2'' I think I am remembering....
all this needs to be done by a good driveshaft tech... to get the shaft good and straight... and in ''phase''.... that way it will be in balance.... no need to balance a good straight shaft....

IIRC (don't count on it!), The ID and splines are the same, but there is a different OD on the yoke on SOME of the ST400's.... it depends on the particular tailshaft of the ST400. It might be a early vs late thing.

You remember correctly Walt, I have one from a 67 and it takes an odd-ball yoke. not sure if it is a tail-housing away from being "normal" or not but it sounds like a good plan!

Thanks for the advice - I am lucky enough that Ken from Everyday Performance GAVE me a short shaft TH400 with the larger OD tailshaft. So now I've got everything except the yoke and a crossmember (and floor pass-though)

Doc - saw you called, was at the beach all weekend, I'll call this week.

Walt - saw you sent a PM - it's no big deal, put it to good use!

Aaron - the (a) 300 is going back in - I expect my internals and the new case will do the trick. And best of luck to the both of us! Any news from the machine shop? I've got car projects stacked up past all my likely available summer weekends already! My wife and kids have a rule - if its good weather, we head to the beach for one, if not both weekend days. Non negotiable - Drag racing, wrenching, yardwork or anything else be damned. Actually kinda makes sense, Summer is too short as it is.

No word yet...my local machine shop is a busy place, so I'm hoping they can get the basics measured this week so I can buy pistons and they can get started on the machining. Summer is short! I often wonder if it's too short to work on cars in a hot garage all the time--I think you have the right idea! I'm a high school teacher though...when my wife's at work, I head to the garage in the summer.

Re: Ventilated ST30-- ST300 switch pitch

    hello all
I picked up a 1967 Buick Skylark Sport Coupe 340cc with a ST300 switch pitch transmission. (I think)
Does the switch pitch have the funny carburetor linkage? I'm having the tranny rebuilt by a professional. Anything I should ask for or have the shop DO during this rebuild? He has to order the internal pump already as is was making a noise like a bucket of bolts when the car started.

Is this set up rare? It also has a the floor shifter and some kleanex crome thing under the glove box.
    Thanks brian

Congrats on your new purchase - looks pretty solid!

Your car does seem to have the SP linkage and switch, so you'll probably find that's a pretty entertaining transmission when you get it done..

If you're not racing, I would suggest leaving the transmission stock... however you could wire in a Bruce Roe electronic controller to better take advantage of the converter stall speeds, do a search on the board and you can read up on it. i did it, and find that it gave the tranny added flexibility and really got the car moving quick!

As an update to my situation: I actually picked up the 66 GS core tranny yesterday from Dr. Frankenbuick, who hangs out on 65GS.com.. super nice guy and didn't take advantage of the fact I was really screwed.....the night before I had finally gotten my tranny out of the car, so now both are in my trunk and on the way to the trans shop this morning..

I see that the 66 tranny has a different style low servo and cover, so I hope I can use my 65 parts and keep the correct coding and appearance. The idea is to use my 65 internals in the 66 case - does anybody know of any pieces that are definately 66 only?

    Thanks,

    Success!

Almost 3 months to the day, I finally have the 65 back on the road....I'll have to write up all the specifics of the tranny and converter build next week, but looks like I might get some track time in this fall after all.
