In my quest to spend as much time and money on this car as possible, I saw the vent window seals on the passenger side were all buggered up, so I bought a set. As I then started taking apart my drivers door, I looked at the chrome and stainless and thought, i can polish that up to make it look better.
So then I take apart the vent window assembly completely.

I polished up the stainless around everything and it looks pretty good, however the little latch handle can't be done when it is still on the glass. It looks like there is a small roll pin in there, if I push that roll pin out, does that little chrome latch just fall out, or am I just begging for the glass breakage fairy to come down and grant me a nice shattering.

Who here has taken that off? I hate going in blind.

Also, the large cast and chromed vent window frame piece has a couple corrosion pits, it will cost about $120 each to have them stripped and re-chromed, or I can buy repo pieces for anywhere from $90-120 each. Keeping the money local and reusing the original parts seems the most sure thing, however saving $60 on the set sounds good too. Has anyone used the repo parts and how do they look/fit?

    thanks

It works just as you think, push out the pin it comes off. There may/should be a spring washer behind the latch, try to keep track of it. New latches are fairly cheap.
Had some pot metal chrome parts redone but never used repros.

They are on ebay, opgi has them here. http://www.opgi.com/p/glass/1443/89/CH26802.html

Search for vent window frame and you can find them around. Cheapest I found was $89 plus shipping but the name of that place is at work. The other low cost is about $101 including shipping on ebay.

I'm kind of leaning that way now too. Plus this way I can keep one door assembled while one is apart, and then when I get completely upside down and lost, I can have a finished one to refer to.

I sent the door out to be blasted and sealed, they did a fair job, not great, but it only cost $60 so I can't complain too much. I will just get in there and kill off any rust I see and slosh some rust bullet paint around the base to make sure everything is sealed up good, then weld up the areas I cut out due to rust, plus I think I have decided to remove the chrome strip that goes along the bottom of the door. Decided I am going to go for the less is more look.

Like this car. I think this looks bad ass.

Still making up my mind about the vinyl top or even just painting the top black. I guess I have to make up my mind on those things and either weld up holes or not sometime.

    Jon,

Have the originals rechromed, I think you'll be happier with that.
Consider the painted top route too, thats what I did on the 65.
I really like it that way, but quite a bit of extra work was needed to fix
the rust pitting that was hiding under the vinyl.
