 Hello, I am looking for a torque convertor to bolt up to my 425. I see a couple of variable pitch convertors on the board here posted. My question is, are the bolt patterns for a 400 430 455 the same as the 401 & 425? I presume the convertors I see for sale came off of 455's and I am not sure if they will bolt to my 425 fly wheel. Any comments would be appreciated.:Do No:

    Thanks!!!

My first question is, What is wrong with the one you have? They are rebuildable by a good transmission shop.

A switch pitch T/C bolt pattern to a Super Turbine or Turbo hydromatic flex plate should be universal. There are a couple sets of holes already drilled in the flex plate. The 455 has a different flex plate but is close. In fact the flexplate I have on my 425 is a new flexplate made from a 455 (new) core.

The car was apart when purchased. So far the only thing found missing is the convertor & radiator. The trans had been rebuilt at some time but dont know what happened to the t/c. Local transhop had 4 instock here. I thought perhaps one here on the board would offer more stall for the money... So, it looks like the T/C are pretty much a universal fit then with the flex plate. :TU:

    Thanks!

But a switch-pitch converter won't fit a NON-switch pitch transmission. What trans do you have?

No switch-pitch transmissions behind 455s. No division offered a 455 before '68 model year; and switch-pitch was done at the end of the '67 model year.

The trans is the original that came in the car. The car is a 65 riviera GS. Factory dual 4's on a 425. It a Switch Pitch Trans. The convertor was missing is all. Car was in various states of restoration when purchased. Car here, chrome there, engine here & trans over there. It was scattered but other wise complete and in good shape. All original ( as far as I can tell)down to carbs, tags on the carbs, packard wires, distributer & etc. The machine work on the engine was complete. New seats, guides, pistons etc. Just need to be put back together. I think the convertor I am buying will work fine. Still looking for a good performance lumpy cam for it. Any ideas?

    Thanks, for the responses...

If you have a switch pitch converter, then the front drum and pump must be a switch pitch or it wont work. Also, the same goes with the non SP trans parts. The stator of the pump which is what the converter uses to drive the innards of the converter is completely different. Enclosed in the pic is the front pump for a variable pitch. Notice the oil feed hole and the machined surface for the bushing to ride in... the normal trannies don't have this.

    Yes... All of the above.

Perhaps my reply was too cryptic. You DO want a Switch Pitch converter!

You said that the members that are listing the torque converters you were talking about buying ARE switch pitches. That is a popular modification to 455's as well as others... I assumed...

  8. I have a source for UNMODFIFIED swiutch pitch converters if you need one.. dont buy one that has been modified if you can avoid it.

There was a thread that Walt started some time ago that lists various users cams. The "search" tool is pretty handy. Here it is:

I might also suggest reading up on the difference in the "advertised" versus "actual" stock rocker ratio and consider upgrading if you can afford it. Tom (Telriv) can tell you more about that.
