I have almost zero information about this '68 Riv's rebuilt engine, other than the owner/builder went with Edelbrock intake and carb, plus chrome kit, etc. The carb is a 750 cfm, which Edelbrock says isn't needed on a stock/street 430. I'm not looking to hot rod the car anyway, but this does show the owner wasn't being cheap with the build.

All of that said, I'm trying to figure out what mods were done. I pulled the valve cover and tried to measure valve lift with a dial gauge, but got readings all over the place (because the hydraulic lifters give inconsistent numbers). And since I have no idea what a stock setup is supposed to look like, can anyone tell me anything about the attached pic, and if it all looks stock to you?

Red spray markings on the springs - is this stock? I can't find any information about what's supposed to be in there.

    Side note: head castings are correct for '68 430 (also 400 & 455) - 1382091; also "BM 4"

Well, Edelbrock’s right; no 430 needs an Edelbrock carb no matter what cfm.

If you want to measure lift remove the rocker arm assembly an measure the lift from the top of the pushrod. This will stop the spring from collapsing the lifter.

Stk motors came with 800 cfn so why these ppl keep saying a 750 is too big I have no clue.

The paint on the springs looks more like over spray to me, there is alot of red paint in the head area under the valve cover that is now there from that factory in your picture

Biggest carb you should throw on a stock 430 is an 850 Holley, smallest probably a 750 Quadrajet

Great idea. Didn't think of that when I was struggling with it. I'll try this again soon.

Also, your comment on the springs may be true. Thanks.
