I have some smoke on startup and decided to try new valve seals. I have a set of 8 umbrella style that came with a Felpro gasket set.

The seals that are on the heads are different - they appear to be teflon type. The heads have had some pretty serious porting along the way, and I'm pretty sure they installed the race style seals.

Where can I get replacements for these seals, and how do they come off? I'm assuming that heads have been machined to use these seals and I probably can't go back tho the stock style.

Let me know what you guys think - here's a picture of what is on the car now.

I don't know for sure, but I think the seals you have may be stock.

If the umbrella seals are like mine I think they are meant to go over the top of the valve retainer. I had a problem with the oil running down the exhaust stems and it would smoke on startup and those helped a lot. I have a nailhead though, yours may be different.:bglasses:

John they are teflon seals that are on your heads now. you may not be able to run the stock seals if you have dual springs they will not fit inside the spring. You can get them at any machine shop or speed shop but you first need to know the guide dia. .530 or .500 .530 is the most commonand your valve stem is 3/8.Just use a flat blade screw driver to pull the seal off the guide. When you put the new ones on warm them in hot water first and the will go on better there is also a small plastic guide that goes over the valve tip to protect the seal. after you get it on use a small picece of plastic tube that fits over the top part of the seal where the metal ring is at and litely tap it on.

    Thanks Mike

I was a little nervous about tearing into these and making things worse. I appreciate your information.
