I recently had my SP 400 rebuilt and not really happy with the feel. I am going to throw in a shift kit, but I also heard I should upgrade to a newer valve body to the fix 3-2 shift? Should I just fork out the dough and buy one of the new ones from tci or similiar vender? or should I just use one from a donor? And what year donor should I go with? Clyde
Just get a valvebody from a 70's big car. That will do it I have one from a 71BC trans. This will give you a 3-2 downshift at part throttle instead of full throttle. It will also let you adjust the governor so that the car will upshift higher from 2nd to 3rd at WOT. Mine shifts from 1-2 at 5500 and 2-3 at 5400 like clockwork.
I put the later one in mine and I love the part throttle downshifts......and best of all she'll drop from 3 to 1st up to about 45 MPH without touching the shifter! :Brow:
Any later model TH400 VB should work. I often use the truck TH400 cores to build performance units. I do a few mods to the VB depending on use. I also use these VB's for cores to build manual/auto valve bodies and reverse pattern manual VB's. Ask around some of your local transmission shops for a core TH400 valve body. I would use a later styyle VB and a TransGo kit if you are doing it in the car. If you have the trans out I'll tell you how to modify it to work better than anything else out there. Mild part throttle shifts and firm WOT.
