Valley Pan - What does it do?

    Just curious as to what the valley pan (I think that's what it's called, it's under the intake manifold) does?

    I don't seem to remember seeing them on other GM motors, but it's been a while.

    I think it was meant to keep hot oil off the bottom of the intake, keeping the intake temps down allows for a cooler fuel mixture.
    It also keeps oil from being flung at the PCV valve, so it does not suck oil into the carb.
