after shuting motor off--how long should the booster hold vacuum? I have a vac guage on my extra booster and it holds vac for a couple of seconds and then the guage begins to drop rapidly. is this an iindication of a leak in the system?thisproblem is driving nuts. Ken

Mine holds for days at least. Maybe longer. Sounds like a leak. Easiest is the valve that goes in the booster then check the seal around the valve in the booster. If not those, it is probably the seal around the booster halves or the diaphragm inside.

Every time I've had an issue, it has been so bad I could hear it sucking. You might try shutting the motor off and sticking your head under the dash (listening around the brake booster rod hole) and again under the hood near the brake booster. I don't think my hand vac pump will produce enough vacuum to test one of those but if you have an AC evac unit, it might allow you to do some troubleshooting without working around the running engine.

    Replace the master cylinder.
